World Day of Grandparents and the Family

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Upon entering the church last Sunday, you will have undoubtedly noticed the scaffolding in the sanctuary around the altar canopy. There is nothing wrong. Nothing is broken and the roof is not leaking. In fact, it means something is right! Due to some generous donations from parishioners, we are finally able to add another piece of art that was originally planned for the church. Within the half-dome above the altar canopy, we are adding the image of the Holy Spirit dove, painted by our resident artist and parishioner, Alice Judd. This is a very ancient and universal symbol above the altars of many Catholic churches, including at the very apex of the apse in Old St. Mary’s.

The image is a wonderful reminder that it is at the words of Christ and through the overshadowing power of the Holy Spirit that simple bread and wine are transformed into the very Body and Blood of Christ. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that indeed every Sacrament of the Church has its effect. I will speak more about the symbolism once the image is unveiled. Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Very soon with great prayer and love, we will send off one of our young parishioners, Anastasia (Stasia) Pierce, daughter of Deacon Bob and Donna. Stasia will be formally joining the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, an active-contemplative religious Order. Stasia will enter their House outside of Milwaukee for several years of prayer and discernment. The wonderful sisters of this Order run several assisted living and nursing homes and provide for the spiritual needs of their residents.

Stasia is profoundly grateful for all of your prayers and support. Her formal entry is scheduled for August 4th. Please continue to keep Stasia in your prayers. Also, please ask God to open all of our hearts to answer His call no matter where that call might lead. May our parish bring forth many more holy vocations to the priesthood and the religious life!

As I mentioned in my column last Sunday, this weekend we celebrate the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, a new celebration in honor of all grandparents and the elderly celebrated every year in the Church on the fourth Sunday in July. I’ll close with words from our Holy Father: “Dear grandparents, dear elderly persons, we are called to be artisans of the revolution of tenderness in our world! Let us do so by learning to make ever more frequent and better use of the most valuable instrument at our disposal and, indeed, the one best suited to our age: prayer. … Our trustful prayer can do a great deal. … To all of you, and to your loved ones, I send my blessing and the assurance of my closeness and affection.”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,
Al entrar en la iglesia el domingo pasado, sin duda habrán notado los andamios en el presbiterio alrededor del dosel del altar. No hay nada malo. No hay nada roto y el techo no tiene goteras. De hecho, ¡significa que algo está bien! Gracias a algunas generosas donaciones de los feligreses, finalmente podemos agregar otra obra de arte que originalmente se planeó para la iglesia. Dentro de la media cúpula sobre el dosel del altar, estamos agregando la imagen de la paloma del Espíritu Santo, pintada por nuestra artista residente y feligresa, Alice Judd. Este es un símbolo muy antiguo y universal sobre los altares de muchas iglesias católicas, incluso en el vértice del ábside en Santa María Histórica

La imagen es un maravilloso recordatorio de que es por las palabras de Cristo y por el poder del Espíritu Santo que el pan y el vino simples se transforman en el mismo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. Es a través del poder del Espíritu Santo que cada Sacramento de la Iglesia tiene su efecto. Hablaré más sobre el simbolismo una vez que se revele la imagen. ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo, ven!
Muy pronto, con gran oración y amor, despediremos a una de nuestras jóvenes feligreses, Anastasia (Stasia) Pierce, hija del diácono Bob y Donna. Stasia se unirá formalmente a las Hermanas Carmelitas del Divino Corazón de Jesús, una Orden religiosa activa y contemplativa. Stasia entrará en su Casa en las afueras de Milwaukee para pasar varios años de oración y discernimiento. Las maravillosas hermanas de esta Orden administran varios hogares de ancianos y de vida asistida y satisfacen las necesidades espirituales de sus residentes.

Stasia está profundamente agradecida por todas sus oraciones y apoyo. Su ingreso formal está programado para el 4 de agosto. Continúen manteniendo a Stasia en sus oraciones. Además, pídale a Dios que abra todos nuestros corazones para responder a Su llamado sin importar a dónde pueda llevar ese llamado. ¡Que nuestra parroquia produzca muchas más vocaciones santas al sacerdocio ya la vida religiosa!

Como mencioné en mi columna del domingo pasado, este fin de semana celebramos el Día Mundial de los Abuelos y los Ancianos, una nueva celebración en honor a todos los abuelos y ancianos que se celebra cada año en la Iglesia el cuarto domingo de julio. Cierro con las palabras de nuestro Santo Padre: "Queridas abuelas y queridos abuelos, queridas ancianas y queridos ancianos, en este mundo nuestro estamos llamados a ser artífices de la revolución de la ternura. Hagámoslo, aprendiendo a utilizar cada vez más y mejor el instrumento más valioso que tenemos, y que es el más apropiado para nuestra edad: el de la oración.
... Nuestra invocación confiada puede hacer mucho.
... Que mi Bendición, con la seguridad de mi cercanía afectuosa, llegue a todos ustedes y a sus seres queridos."
