Water of Eternal Life

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Christ's encounter with the Samaritan woman is a model of what our Christian life should be. In her we see represented all those who wish to know Jesus. We also see the two sides of every path to conversion: on one hand there are man's desires: "give me something to drink;" and on the other hand, Jesus' proposal: "if you only knew the gift of God."

Our Christian world is a new Samaria without borders. We journey alongside people of all walks of life. Some come from the purist paganism, with gods of money, pleasure, political parties, race, and violence. They, too, have learned about religion, and attend funerals, baptisms, and first communions. They participate in many Christian events, but they are not living in accord with the Church. These are things that create tension and discord between practicing Catholics and these new "Samaritans."

Modern day men and women are thirsting. We, too, are thirsting. It is something we all experience. There are people who seem to have everything imaginable but are still empty of God. Thirst is a good thing. He who is not thirsty will not seek springs of water. He who knows it all will never ask questions. He who thinks he is a saint will never ask forgiveness. He who thinks he is rich will not ask for anything. If someone has everything, why would he need Lenten conversion and Easter? There is a permanent thirst in man's heart: thirst for truth, for happiness, for love; thirst for fullness, for life. We need the Water of true Life, and only Christ can give it to us.

We have drawn water from the wells of the world for years and years, and this water never fully quenches our thirst. The Samaritan woman's experience has been repeated throughout the centuries in the lives of all men, for we are all sinners. We must not be like those people who say, "God doesn't listen to me." This is false. Maybe you need to make room in yourself for God. Even if you think He does not hear your pleas, he does! He knows your desires before you do! This Lent is a time for sincere prayer.

This Lent I invite you to pray like the Samaritan woman: "Lord, I'm thirsting for you; I'm tired from the journey. Give me something to drink. You alone can give me the abundant life. Fill me with You."

May we take to heart the words of St. Teresa of Avila: "Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things are passing away. God never changes. Patience obtains all things; whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices."

Agua de Vida Eterna

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

El encuentro de Cristo con la samaritana es un modelo de lo que debería ser nuestra vida cristiana. En ella vemos representados a todos aquellos que desean conocer a Jesus. Tambien vemos las dos caras de todo camino de conversion. Por un lado, están los deseos del hombre: «Dame de beber»; y por otro, la propuesta de Jesús: «Si conocieras el don de Dios». Nuestro mundo cristiano es una nueva Samaria sin fronteras. Caminamos junto a personas de todos los ámbitos de la vida. Algunos provienen del paganismo puritánico, con dioses del dinero, el placer, los partidos políticos, la raza y la violencia. Ellos también han aprendido sobre religión y asisten a funerales, bautizos y primeras comuniones. Participan en muchos eventos cristianos, pero no viven en armonía con la Iglesia. Estas son cosas que crean tensión y discordia entre los catolicos practicantes y estos nuevos «samaritanos».

Los hombres y mujeres de hoy tienen sed. Nosotros tambien tenemos sed. Es algo que todos experimentamos. Hay personas que parecen tenerlo todo, pero aún así están vacías de Dios. La sed es algo bueno. Quien no tiene sed no buscara fuentes de agua. Quien lo sabe todo nunca hara preguntas. Quien se cree santo nunca pedirá perdón. Quien se cree rico no pedirá nada. Si alguien lo tiene todo, ¿para qué necesitaría la conversion cuaresmal y la Pascua? Hay una sed permanente en el corazón del hombre: sed de verdad, de felicidad, de amor; sed de plenitud, de vida. Necesitamos el Agua de la Vida verdadera, y solo Cristo puede dárnosla.

Hemos sacado agua de los pozos del mundo durante anos y anos, y esta agua nunca sacia por completo nuestra sed. La experiencia de la samaritana se ha repetido a lo largo de los siglos en la vida de todos los hombres, porque todos somos pecadores. No debemos ser como quienes dicen: <Dios no me escucha». Esto es falso. Tal vez necesites hacer espacio en ti mismo para Dios. Aunque pienses que Él no escucha tus súplicas, ¡sí las escucha! ¡Él conoce tus deseos antes que tu! Esta Cuaresma es un tiempo para la oración sincera.

Esta Cuaresma te invito a orar como la samaritana: «Señor, tengo sed de ti; estoy cansada del viaje. Dame de beber. Solo tú puedes darme vida en abundancia. Lléname de Ti».

Que tomemos en serio las palabras de Santa Teresa de Ávila: «Nada te turbe, nada te espante, todo se pasa. Dios no se muda. La paciencia todo lo alcanza; quien a Dios tiene nada le falta; solo Dios basta».
