Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the Gospel today we heard the story of Jesus giving new life to his friend who had died. It is a real and miraculous fact, and it shows us what Christ wants to do with each one of us. He wants to give us life, abundant life. He wants to give us a Life that triumphs over all forms of death within us: sin, hatred, egotism, lies, violence, and injustice. This is what it means to celebrate Easter: to conquer death within us so that we can share the Life of God in us more each day.

The resurrection of Lazarus happened to “give glory to God,” that the son might be glorified and the faith of the disciples might be awakened. This return to life that Christ achieved for his friend Lazarus is the ultimate desire of all people everywhere. For us believers it means passing from death to life even now, in this life, by clinging to the person of Christ through our faith.

Death is a serious and painful reality. But the Good News of Christ is that death is not the end of our lives, but rather a transition from this life on earth to Eternal Life with Him. The death of a loved one can leave us feeling defeated by sadness, but today’s Gospel shows us that our faithful loved ones will live on after death, only in a different dimension. There is no sorrow, or accidents, or death. There is only the Kingdom of Life in heaven.

So, do you ever think about your ultimate destiny? Do you know that death is only a step to new life? Do you know that if Christ has risen from the dead, so will your faithful loved ones?

The end of Lent is a perfect time to renew our faith, a renewal not just of our knowledge, but of our attitude. Is your faith more or less just a passive acceptance of truths - though some of these truths are indeed difficult – or does your faith begin with a sincere and total trust in Jesus?

Christ is a sure, faithful, and eternal friend who fills us with new and indestructible life. Easter is like spring! Will others see this new and flourishing life in us? Will they see the energy, newness, freedom, joy, and life that the risen Christ gives us? Christ says to us, just as he said to Lazarus: “Come Forth!”
