Faithful to God’s Law

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

After proclaiming the beatitudes to the vast crowds in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us how to apply it to our lives: His followers should be faithful to God's Law and treat their neighbors in a way guided by love. Jesus did not come to abolish the laws, but to fulfill them. Jesus is no revolutionary fanatic, who came to rock the established order. Jesus did not mince his words and always called a spade a spade: He says "No!" to sin and disobedience, and "Yes!" to the law of God. Jesus invites us to reject mere formulism and purely external observances of the law, such as the Pharisees practiced. Jesus speaks with a new kind of language; He says, "fulfill the law out of love for God and for neighbor."

Jesus shows us the right attitudes to have toward our neighbor. First and foremost, Christ shows us the attitude to have with regard to life: the 5th commandment said, "Thou shall not kill!" But Jesus goes farther: "Love thy neighbor!" If you had to choose between an act of worship to God and an opportunity to promote peace among your brothers, choose peace with your brothers. Self-giving love excludes any deed that is demeaning, hateful, or wrathful. This is why every true act of worship should lead to reconciliation with those we have offended. Before God's altar there is only room for brothers and sisters who are reconciled with one another.

Human love is born in the family. To defend the sacredness of the family, God has given us, like two guardians, the 6th and 9th commandments. They are two fonts of serenity and peace. Here also Jesus goes far beyond what is prescribed by the law, beyond the mere materiality of the acts of our bodies. "If a man looks at the wife of another with the desire to possess her, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart." The 6th and 9th commandments protect and preserve the family, the domestic church.

At the beginning of today's Mass, the Church invites us to pray together with the priest: "O God, who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true, grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you ... " May following the beatitudes help us become a dwelling pleasing to God.

Fieles a la Ley de Dios

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Despues de proclamar las bienaventuranzas a la multitud en el Sermon de la Montana, Jesus nos enseña como aplicarlas a nuestras vidas: sus seguidores deben ser fieles a la Ley de Dios y tratar a su prójimo con amor. Jesus no vino a abolir las leyes, sino a cumplirlas. Jesus no es un fanatico revolucionario que vino a trastornar el orden establecido. Jesús no se anduvo con rodeos y siempre llamo a las cosas por su nombre: dice «¡No!» al pecado y a la desobediencia, y «¡Sí!» a la ley de Dios. Jesus nos invita a rechazar el mero formalismo y las observancias puramente externas de la ley, como las que practicaban los fariseos. Jesus habla con un lenguaje nuevo; dice: «Cumplan la ley por amor a Dios y al prójimo».

Jesus nos muestra las actitudes correctas que debemos tener hacia nuestro projimo. Ante todo, Cristo nos muestra la actitud que debemos tener con respecto a la vida: el quinto mandamiento dice: «¡No matarás!». Pero Jesús va más allá: «¡Ama a tu prójimo!». Si tuvieras que elegir entre un acto de adoracion a Dios y una oportunidad para promover la paz entre tus hermanos, elige la paz con tus hermanos. El amor que se entrega a sí mismo excluye cualquier acto que sea humillante, odioso o lleno de ira. Por eso, todo verdadero acto de adoración debe conducir a la reconciliacion con aquellos a quienes hemos ofendido. Ante el altar de Dios solo hay lugar para hermanos y hermanas que estan reconciliados entre sí.

El amor humano nace en la familia. Para defender la santidad de la familia, Dios nos ha dado, como dos guardianes, el sexto y el noveno mandamiento. Son dos fuentes de serenidad y paz. Aquí tambien Jesus va mucho mas alla de lo prescrito por la ley, más allá de la mera materialidad de los actos de nuestro cuerpo. «Si un hombre mira a la mujer de otro con el deseo de poseerla, ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en su corazón». El sexto y el noveno mandamiento protegen y preservan la familia, la iglesia doméstica. Al comienzo de la Misa de hoy, la Iglesia nos invita a orar junto con el sacerdote: «Oh Dios, que nos ensenas que habitas en los corazones justos y sinceros, concedenos que, transformados por tu gracia, nos convirtamos en una morada agradable a ti ... » Que seguir las bienaventuranzas nos ayude a ser una morada grata a Dios.
