The Still Small Voice of God

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Friday around 6:00pm, we returned from our pilgrimage to Greece and the Greek Isles, following in the footsteps of St. Paul. There were so many highlights and blessings over the 11 days that it is difficult to reflect upon them and process them: Athens and the Acropolis; Mars Hill; Corinth; Ephesus; The House of the Virgin Mary; the island of Patmos; the monastery of St. John; the islands of Crete and Santorini; the hanging monasteries of Meteora; and Thessaloniki. It was truly an amazing experience to see the wonders of God’s creation and reflect upon St. Paul’s journeys and ministry as he was used of God to establish the early Church.

Along the way, of course, we had several tour guides. They equipped us with a Whisper-Jet device for our ears. This enabled them to communicate with us in a low voice as we went through a church, monastery or museum. We could hear the guide’s voice, and her voice would not interrupt the other groups who were also going through the site. And...if you strayed too far from the group, you would receive an automated message in your ear that said: “You are too far from the group. Please return to the group.”

As I listened to this message throughout our pilgrimage, it reminded me that all of us are pilgrims here on earth, each of us hoping that our journey will lead us to heaven to live with Christ forever in the love of the Most Holy Trinity. It occurred to me that it would be helpful if each of us had a Whisper-Jet device in our ear that would help us on our journey. One that, if we began to fall away from the Church would whisper in our ears: “You are too far from Holy Mother Church. Please return to the Church.” Wouldn’t that be a powerful and helpful reminder? And yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we know that we do have a system that does that for us.

From baptism on, we have the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, who guides us and speaks to us. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. 27 And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (Rom 8:26, 27) And in early October as we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, we were reminded that each of us has a personal Guardian Angel who will be our personal guide on our journey to heaven...if we listen. May we listen carefully for the still small voice of God in our lives!

La Voz Apacible y Suave de Dios

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

El viernes, alrededor de las 18:00, regresamos de nuestra peregrinación a Grecia y las islas griegas, siguiendo los pasos de San Pablo. Hubo tantos momentos destacados y bendiciones durante los 11 días que es difícil re exionar sobre ellos y procesarlos: Atenas y la Acrópolis; el Areópago; Corinto; Éfeso; la Casa de la Virgen María; la isla de Patmos; el monasterio de San Juan; las islas de Creta y Santorini; los monasterios colgantes de Meteora; y Tesalónica. Fue una experiencia verdaderamente asombrosa contemplar las maravillas de la creación de Dios y re exionar sobre los viajes y el ministerio de San Pablo, quien fue usado por Dios para establecer la Iglesia primitiva.

Por supuesto, durante el camino, tuvimos varios guías turísticos. Nos proporcionaron un dispositivo Whisper-Jet para los oídos. Esto les permitió comunicarse con nosotros en voz baja mientras pasábamos por una iglesia, un monasterio o un museo. Podíamos oír la voz de la guía, y su voz no interrumpía a los demás grupos que también recorrían el sitio.

Y... si te alejabas demasiado del grupo, recibías un mensaje automático en el oído que decía: "Estás demasiado lejos del grupo. Por favor, regrese al grupo". Escuchar este mensaje durante nuestra peregrinación me recordó que todos somos peregrinos aquí en la tierra, cada uno con la esperanza de que nuestro viaje nos lleve al cielo para vivir con Cristo para siempre en el amor de la Santísima Trinidad.

Se me ocurrió que sería útil que cada uno tuviera un dispositivo Whisper-Jet en el oído que nos ayudara en nuestro viaje. Uno que, si empezámos a alejarnos de la Iglesia, nos susurrara al oído: "Estás demasiado lejos de la Santa Madre Iglesia. Por favor, regresa a la Iglesia". ¿No sería un recordatorio poderoso y útil?

Y, sin embargo, si somos honestos con nosotros mismos, sabemos que tenemos un sistema que lo hace por nosotros. Desde el bautismo, tenemos al Espíritu Santo, la Tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, quien nos guía y nos habla. «Igualmente, el mismo Espíritu viene en ayuda de nuestra debilidad porque no sabemos orar como es debido; pero es Espíritu intercede por nosotros con gemidos inefables. Y el que sondea los corazones conoce el deseo del Espíritu y sabe que su intercesión en favor de los santos está de acuerdo con la voluntad divina.» (Romanos 8,26-27).

Y a principios de octubre, al celebrar la Fiesta de los Santos Ángeles Custodios, recordamos que cada uno de nosotros tiene un Ángel de la Guarda que será nuestro guía personal en nuestro camino al cie lo... si escuchamos. ¡Escuchemos atentamente la voz apacible y deli cada de Dios en nuestras vidas!
