Reflection on My Heart Operation

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

October 11th is the one-year anniversary of my open-heart surgery. It's hard to believe that one year has gone by since that major event in my life. I want you to know that I'm ever so grateful for your prayers and support over this past year. I feel good, I'm back exercising again. I can ride my bike. I can go to the gym. I feel very healthy. All the same, a major milestone like this is an opportunity to reflect on the many graces that God has given me through this experience.

In April of 2024, Dr. Christy Mills came into my office. Her purpose was to ask me to celebrate the Latin Mass. I couldn't do that for her, but during her visit, she volunteered to give me a thorough medical exam. Because of the history of heart problems in my family, she put me on the treadmill and found a possible lack of blood going to my heart. Shortly thereafter, she did a heart cath on me and found three blocked arteries. That was on Monday October 7th. By Friday, October 11th I was on the operating table at Wellstar MCG in Augusta. Dr. Vijay Patel and his team did a quadruple bypass on me.

Our faith teaches us that nothing happens to us by chance. All of us know well the words of St. Paul written to the Romans, "We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28) I am most grateful that God used Dr. Christy Mills to intervene in my life. I had no major symptoms. I did have some minor shortness of breath at times but attributed it to the pneumothorax that I suffered in Georgetown in 2019 and yes ... to the fact that I was getting older.

I am most grateful that this medical issue was caught before I suffered a major heart attack. It was hard enough to recover from a quadruple bypass; it would have been much worse had I suffered a heart attack.

I am truly thankful for the prayers and support that the faithful of the parish provided to me. Wonderfully generous families in our parish cooked meals for me at least twice a week for about two months. And Father Orlando selflessly covered all the Masses, meetings and appointments for me during my recovery.

I just want to tell all of you a very thankful I am for your prayers, your support, your encouragement and for allowing me to have the time that I needed to recover. I especially want to thank Dr. Christy Mills who made sure I got the right treatment and Dr. Vijay Patel and his team who did a successful operation on me.

Reflexiones Sobre Mi Operación De Corazón

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

El 11 de octubre se cumple un año de mi cirugía a corazón abierto. Es difícil creer que ya haya pasado un año desde ese importante acontecimiento en mi vida. Quiero que sepan que estoy muy agradecido por sus oraciones y apoyo durante este último año. Me siento bien, he vuelto a hacer ejercicio. Puedo montar en bicicleta. Puedo ir al gimnasio. Me siento muy saludable. Aun así, un acontecimiento tan importante como este me brinda la oportunidad de re exionar sobre las muchas gracias que Dios me ha concedido a través de esta experiencia.

En abril de 2024, la Dra. Christy Mills vino a mi consultorio. Su propósito era pedirme que celebrara la misa en latín. No pude hacerlo por ella, pero durante su visita, se ofreció a realizarme un examen médico completo. Debido a los antecedentes de problemas cardíacos en mi familia, me puso en la cinta de correr y detectó una posible falta de sangre al corazón. Poco después, me realizó un cateterismo cardíaco y encontró tres arterias obstruidas. Eso fue el lunes 7 de octubre. Para el viernes 11 de octubre, ya estaba en la mesa de operaciones del Wellstar MCG en Augusta. El Dr. Vijay Patel y su equipo me realizaron un bypass cuádruple.

Nuestra fe nos enseña que nada nos sucede por casualidad. Todos conocemos bien las palabras de San Pablo escritas a los romanos: «Sabemos que en todas las cosas Dios trabaja para bien con quienes lo aman, quienes son llamados de acuerdo a su propósito» (Romanos 8:28). Estoy muy agradecido de que Dios haya usado a la Dra. Christy Mills para intervenir en mi vida. No tuve síntomas importantes. Sí tuve una leve di cultad para respirar a veces, pero lo atribuí al neumotórax que sufrí en Georgetown en 2019 y sí... al hecho de que estaba envejeciendo.

Estoy muy agradecido de que este problema médico se detectara antes de que sufriera un infarto grave. Ya fue bastante difícil recuperarse de un bypass cuádruple; Habría sido mucho peor si hubiera sufrido un infarto.

Estoy profundamente agradecido por las oraciones y el apoyo que me brindaron los eles de la parroquia. Familias maravillosamente generosas de nuestra parroquia me prepararon comidas al menos dos veces por semana durante unos dos meses. Y el Padre Orlando cubrió desin teresadamente todas las misas, reuniones y citas durante mi recuperación.

Solo quiero decirles a todos que estoy muy agradecido por sus oraciones, su apoyo, su ánimo y por permitirme tener el tiempo que necesitaba para recuperarme. Quiero agradecer especialmente a la Dra. Christy Mills, quien se aseguró de que recibiera el tratamiento adecuado, y al Dr. Vijay Patel y su equipo, quienes me operaron con éxito.
