Suggestions for Summer Reading!

Dear Parishioners,

Our Catholic School students are given incentives to do a lot of reading during their summer vacation. It’s a good idea for faithful Catholics to do summer reading as well. Here are some suggestions: What do you really believe about hell? Do you believe it exists, or do you think that God is too merciful to send anyone to hell? I heartily recommend that all Catholics read The Hell There Is: An Exploration of an Often-Rejected Doctrine of the Church, by Msgr. Charles Pope. Msgr. Pope has stated that “Of all the theological errors commonly held today, the most popular is surely the denial of the doctrine of hell.” In a brief and compelling manner, Msgr. Pope clearly presents “The Hell there is.” A must read. Available from catholichomeandchurch.com.

Have you ever wondered why the Catholic Church in which we have lived for the past 60 years seems to be so mired in poor leadership and often fails to “confirm the faith of the brethren”? Father Charles Theodore Murr offers some answers to that question in his book entitled Murder in the 33rd Degree: The Gagnon Investigation into Vatican Freemasonry. In 1975, then Archbishop Edouard Gagnon was personally commissioned by Pope Paul VI to investigate the Vatican’s Roman Curia. This thorough investigation concluded in 1978, the “year of the three Popes.” Father Murr was present in Rome with Archbishop Gagnon and was a personal witness to his investigation. This book will answer many of the questions that people have been asking for over a half century. I am currently listening to a digital version of Hannah's Children: The Women Quietly Defying the Birth Dearth, by Catherine Pakaluk. It is a fascinating and well-researched book. Catherine, herself a mother of eight, travelled across the United States and interviewed 55 women who had five or more children. Catherine is a social scientist, and she used open ended questions to understand who these women are, why and when they chose to have a large family, and what this choice means for them, their families, and the nation. We do indeed have a “birth dearth” in our nation. As a society, we must embrace life and change our culture if we are to survive. Available from Amazon.

Nuestros alumnos de escuelas católicas reciben incentivos para leer durante las vacaciones de verano. Es recomendable que los católicos fieles también lean durante el verano. Aquí tienen algunas sugerencias: ¿Qué creen realmente sobre el infierno? ¿Creen que existe o creen que Dios es demasiado misericordioso como para enviar a alguien al infierno? Recomiendo encarecidamente a todos los católicos que lean El infierno sí existe: una exploración de una doctrina frecuentemente rechazada por la Iglesia, de Mons. Es un libro fascinante y bien documentado. Catherine, madre de ocho hijos, viajó por Estados Unidos y entrevistó a 55 mujeres con cinco o más hijos. Catherine es científica social y utilizó preguntas abiertas para comprender quiénes son estas mujeres, por qué y cuándo eligieron tener una familia numerosa, y qué significa esta decisión para ellas, sus familias y el país.
