Abiding in the Holy Trinity

Dear Friends in Christ,

Today, we celebrate the solemnity of the mystery at the center of our faith, from where everything originates and to where everything returns: the mystery of the unity of God, and at the same time, his subsistence in three equal and yet, different persons. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, unity in communion and communion in unity. In this great day, we must realize that this great mystery is ever present in our lives: from the very Sacrament of our Baptism — which we have received in the name of the Holy Trinity — to our participation in the mystery of the Eucharist, which is made for the glory of the Father, by his Son Jesus Christ, thanks to the Holy Spirit. And it is also the sign by which we Christians recognize one another: the sign of the Cross, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The mission of the Son, Jesus Christ, consists in the revelation of his Father, of whom He is the perfect image, and in the gift of the Spirit, which has also been revealed by the Son. Today, the proclaimed Gospel reading shows us: the Son receives everything from the Father in perfect unity: “Everything that the Father has is mine”; and the Spirit receives all that the Spirit is from the Father and the Son: “for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.” (Jn 16:15) And in another part of this same chapter: “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me” (Jn 15:26).

From all that, let us learn the great and comforting truth: the Holy Trinity, far from being distant and aloof, comes to us, dwells within us, and transforms us. And by this, through the Spirit, we are guided into the whole truth. (Jn 16:13) The incomparable “Christian dignity,” about which St. Leo the Great at times spoke, is this: to keep God's mystery within us and, thus, to celebrate here on Earth our own Heavenly “citizenship” (Phil 3:20) — our abiding in the bosom of the Holy Trinity.

Permaneciendo en la Santísima Trinidad

Queridos amigos en Cristo:

Hoy celebramos la solemnidad del misterio central de nuestra fe, de donde todo se origina y a donde todo retorna: el misterio de la unidad de Dios y, al mismo tiempo, su subsistencia en tres personas iguales y, sin embargo, diferentes: el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo, unidad en la comunión y comunión en la unidad. En este gran día, debemos reconocer que este gran misterio está siempre presente en nuestras vidas: desde el mismo sacramento de nuestro Bautismo —que hemos recibido en el nombre de la Santísima Trinidad— hasta nuestra participación en el misterio de la Eucaristía, que se realiza para gloria del Padre, por su Hijo Jesucristo, gracias al Espíritu Santo. Y es también el signo por el cual los cristianos nos reconocemos: la señal de la cruz, en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo.

La misión del Hijo, Jesucristo, consiste en la revelación de su Padre, de quien es la imagen perfecta, y en el don del Espíritu, también revelado por el Hijo. Hoy, el Evangelio proclamado nos muestra que el Hijo recibe todo del Padre en perfecta unidad: «Todo lo que es del Padre es mío»; y el Espíritu recibe todo lo que el Espíritu es del Padre y del Hijo: «Por eso les digo: «Recibirá de lo mío y se lo anunciará a ustedes» (Jn 16,15). Y en otra parte de este mismo capítulo: «Cuando venga el Paráclito que yo les enviaré desde el Padre, el Espíritu de la Verdad que proviene del Padre, él dará testimonio de mí» (Jn 15,26).

De todo esto, aprendamos la gran y reconfortante verdad: la Santísima Trinidad, lejos de ser indiferente y distante, viene a nosotros, habita en nosotros y nos transforma. Y así, a través del Espíritu, somos guiados hacia la verdad plena. (Jn 16,13) La incomparable «dignidad cristiana», de la que San León Magno habló en ocasiones, es esta: conservar el misterio de Dios en nosotros y, así, celebrar aquí en la Tierra nuestra propia «ciudadanía» celestial (Fil 3,20) - nuestra permanencia en el seno de la Santísima Trinidad.
