Our New Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV!

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am writing this letter three days after the exciting news of the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th successor to St. Peter. What a joy it has been to experience these past few days! I have always loved being Catholic, but these days have been extra special for me. I suspect it has been the same for you.

I will not soon forget the overwhelming joy of those people who crowded into St. Peter’s square. There were people there from dozens of countries, flags, lay men and women, clerics, religious, young and old.

On Friday, as I went to the Post Office, I had two encounters with non-Catholics which revealed how deeply the joy of this papal election has permeated our culture. One lady told me how her 85-year-old mother had excitedly called her exclaiming, “white smoke-white smoke!” Another man stopped me and said how wonderful it was to see and experience the universal joy that was evident throughout the entire world. He didn’t realize it, but he was making a statement about the “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.”

Cardinal Prevost chose to be called Pope Leo XIV and appeared on the loggia in full papal regalia. To me, that’s a signal that he is a man of tradition and that he will, in his own way, attempt to confirm the faith of the brethren and guard the Sacred Tradition of our faith.

So, I must confess that though I did not make any bold predictions about who the new pontiff would be, I did say several times that the Conclave would not elect someone from the United States. No way, I thought. But the Cardinal Electors saw things differently.

So, he is from Chicago, the first pope from the United States and the first from the order of St. Augustine. He has dual citizenship, U.S. and Peruvian, and has served our Lord in Peru for 19 years. There’s a lot to digest there, but like most Americans, I am overwhelmed and very excited to have an American chosen as our Pope. Also, I’m from Minnesota, and so it’s super to have a man from the Midwest chosen as the Supreme Pontiff.

Also, I feel a special connection with Pope Leo XIV because of his time in Latin America. In my time in the Army, I served six months in Panama and a total of two years with the U.S. Army School of the Americas, and then two and a half years in Venezuela. Along the way, I served with Peruvian officers and NCOs and had the chance to travel to Lima, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu. I greatly admire the missionary focus of our new Pope!

Please be faithful to pray for Pope Leo XIV!

¡Nuestro nuevo Pontífice, el Papa León XIV!

Queridos amigos en Cristo:

Escribo esta carta tres días después de la emocionante noticia de la elección del cardenal Robert Francis Prevost como el 267.º sucesor de San Pedro. ¡Qué alegría haber vivido estos últimos días! Siempre me ha encantado ser católico, pero estos días han sido especialmente especiales para mí. Sospecho que también lo han sido para ustedes.

No olvidaré pronto la inmensa alegría de las personas que se agolparon en la Plaza de San Pedro. Había allí personas de docenas de países, banderas, laicos, clérigos, religiosos, jóvenes y mayores.

El viernes, al ir al correo, tuve dos encuentros con personas no católicas que revelaron la profunda alegría con la que esta elección papal ha permeado nuestra cultura. Una señora me contó cómo su madre de 85 años la había llamado emocionada exclamando: "¡Humo blanco, humo blanco!". Otro hombre me detuvo y comentó lo maravilloso que era ver y experimentar la alegría universal que se evidenciaba en todo el mundo. No se daba cuenta, pero estaba haciendo una declaración sobre la "Iglesia una, santa, católica y apostólica".

El Cardenal Prevost eligió llamarse Papa León XIV y apareció en la logia con todas sus galas papales. Para mí, eso indica que es un hombre de tradición y que, a su manera, intentará confirmar la fe de los hermanos y proteger la Sagrada Tradición de nuestra fe.

Así que debo confesar que, aunque no hice predicciones audaces sobre quién sería el nuevo pontífice, sí dije varias veces que el Cónclave no elegiría a alguien de Estados Unidos. De ninguna manera, pensé. Pero los Cardenales Electores vieron las cosas de otra manera.

Así que es de Chicago, el primer papa de Estados Unidos y el primero de la orden de San Agustín. Tiene doble ciudadanía, estadounidense y peruana, y ha servido a nuestro Señor en Perú durante 19 años. Hay mucho que digerir, pero como la mayoría de los estadounidenses, me siento abrumado y muy emocionado de que un estadounidense haya sido elegido como nuestro Papa. Además, soy de Minnesota, así que es fantástico que un hombre del medio oeste haya sido elegido como Sumo Pontífice.

Además, siento una conexión especial con Papa León XIV por su tiempo en Latinoamérica. Durante mi tiempo en el Ejército, serví seis meses en Panamá, dos años en la Escuela de las Américas del Ejército de los Estados Unidos, y dos años y medio en Venezuela. Durante mi tiempo en el Ejército, serví con oficiales y suboficiales peruanos y tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Lima, Cuzco y Machu Picchu. ¡Admiro profundamente el enfoque misionero de nuestro nuevo Papa!
