Dear Friends in Christ,

So…the warm weather has returned as it always does in this part of the country. And with this weather, I see increasing numbers of men, women, and children dressed as if they were headed for the beach. A significant number of men, women, and children are wearing shorts, flip-flops, and a T-shirt from their favorite sports team at Sunday Mass.

I believe that we can and should do better.

For the first 46 years of my life, I was a Protestant. In the first two chapters of my life, my time in the U.S. Army and as a Financial Advisor, I nearly always wore a coat and tie to Sunday services. So did nearly every man. If for some reason I didn’t wear a coat and tie, I never ever dropped below “business casual.” And think about it….I was not going to Sunday services to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. No, I was going to hear the Word of God, to worship, pray, and listen to the sermon. No, I was not receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, but I still dressed respectively and well because I was worshiping God.

From our Catechism: “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.” (CCC, 1324) It’s a gross understatement to say that a lot revolves around our reception of Holy Communion.

Sadly then, some in our parish choose to receive our Lord, the “sovereign omnipotent Lord of the universe, the Great I Am, The Second Person of the Trinity, and the Alpha and the Omega,” while poorly dressed. To those people, I respectfully ask you to reflect and consider:

Would you wear shorts, a T-shirt, and flip-flops to meet with Pope Leo XIV or the President of the United States?

Would you dress that way if you were going to see Les Misérables on Broadway when you had paid $300 for each ticket?

Would you wear shorts if a friend had invited you to dine at his expense at the finest steakhouse in Charleston?

I ask you, what is the lesson that you are showing to the young people of the parish when you dress down in this manner? Do you think they believe that the Mass is important to you?

I realize that not everyone can afford fancy and expensive clothes. I get that, and I’m not asking for that. If the very best you have is a clean pair of blue jeans and a collared shirt…then wear that. And ladies, if you can, wear a simple sundress or slacks and a blouse. If it’s the best that you can do, our Lord will understand and richly bless you as you receive Him.

May we present ourselves at Mass as if we are actually receiving the King of Kings and Lord of Lords in the Blessed Sacrament…because, yes…that’s what we are doing!

Nuestra Vestimenta En La Misa

Queridos Amigos en Cristo,

Así que… como siempre, el clima cálido ha regresado a esta parte del país. Y con este clima, cada vez veo más hombres, mujeres y niños vestidos como si fueran a la playa. Un número significativo de hombres, mujeres y niños visten pantalones cortos, chanclas y una camiseta de su equipo deportivo favorito en la misa dominical.

Creo que podemos y debemos hacerlo mejor.

Durante los primeros 46 años de mi vida, fui protestante. En los dos primeros capítulos de mi vida, mi tiempo en el Ejército de los EE. UU. y como asesor financiero, casi siempre vestía con saco y corbata en los servicios dominicales. Casi todos los hombres también. Si por alguna razón no usaba saco y corbata, mi vestimenta era por lo menos informal de negocios.

Y piénsenlo… no iba a los servicios dominicales para recibir a Jesús en la Sagrada Eucaristía. Iba solo a escuchar la Palabra de Dios, a adorar, orar y escuchar el sermón. No, no estaba recibiendo a Jesús en la Sagrada Eucaristía, pero aun así me vestía con decoro y elegancia porque estaba adorando a Dios.

De nuestro Catecismo: «La Eucaristía es fuente y culmen de la vida cristiana». (CIC, 1324)

Decir que mucho gira en torno a nuestra recepción de la Sagrada Comunión es quedarse corto.

Lamentablemente, algunos en nuestra parroquia eligen recibir a nuestro Señor, el “Soberano y Omnipotente Señor del universo, el Gran Yo Soy, la Segunda Persona de la Trinidad y el Alfa y el Omega”, con una vestimenta pobre.

A esas personas, respetuosamente les pido que reflexionen y consideren:

• ¿Usarían pantalones cortos, camiseta y chanclas para reunirse con el Papa León XIV o el Presidente de los Estados Unidos?

• ¿Se vestirían así si fueran a ver Los Miserables en Broadway, habiendo pagado $300 dólares por cada entrada?

• ¿Usarían pantalones cortos si un amigo los invitara a cenar por su cuenta en el mejor restaurante de carnes de Charleston?

Les pregunto, ¿qué lección les están dando a los jóvenes de la parroquia al vestirse de esta manera?

¿Creen que ellos creen que la Misa es importante para ustedes?

Sé que no todos pueden permitirse ropa elegante y cara. Lo entiendo y no les estoy pidiendo que la compren.

Si lo mejor que tienes son unos jeans limpios y una camisa con cuello, úsalos.

Y mujeres, si pueden, usen un vestido de verano sencillo o pantalones de vestir y una blusa.

Si eso es lo mejor que pueden hacer, nuestro Señor lo comprenderá y las bendecirá abundantemente al recibirlo.

Que nos presentemos en la Misa como si realmente estuviéramos recibiendo al Rey de reyes y Señor de señores en el Santísimo Sacramento…

Porque, sí… ¡eso es lo que estamos haciendo!
