Who is Jesus?...Seriously...Who is He to you?

Dear Friends in Christ,

Just before being elected Pope, Cardinal Ratzinger warned that we live in a “dictatorship of relativism.” This philosophy basically says that everyone's personal ideas about what is true or false, right or wrong are equally valid, as if there were no objective truth or right at all. People of our modern world consider everything to be relative; they don’t believe that there could be a “truth, a way” to which they can commit their lives. In our Gospel today, Thomas doubted, but Christ gave him the clearest answer possible: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

I am the Way: Our Lord said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus presents himself to us as the one who can give full meaning to our existence, as the one who is able to satisfy our desire for happiness, for joy, for true life. Recognizing Jesus as the Way, could anyone lose the path to the Father? Knowing that he is the truth; why would anyone seek the truth in others, or in mere creatures? Having life in him, could death have the final word in our lives?

I am the Truth: Jesus is the truth that we must continue to know and serve. God has made himself our word, has come so close that we can hear perfectly his very heartbeat. Jesus is the true face of God. It's human to want to be right, and most people consider that they are, but there is only one truth. How can we know it? Where can we find it? Jesus answers this interrogative in a surprising way, saying he is the truth. The question “what is truth?” now has one decisive answer: “I am the truth.”

I am the Life: Among the diverse lifestyles that people follow, how can we find one that's more real, more worthy, more intense? Jesus answers this question as well, once again in an existential, personal way. Jesus assures us that he is the life. Our idols can never be the good way, or a good truth, or a good life; rather they are mere false distractions. Jesus reveals the reality of God: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” A way that brings us to the Father, a truth that gives us a reason to struggle, a life that prepares us for our eternal home. Our poor and weak existence is transformed by his presence in a marvelous way.

Truly, it is worth the risk to say with all our faith: I cast my lot with Christ! As St. Peter wrote, “…whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” (I Peter 2:6)

“Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida”

Queridos amigos en Cristo,

Justo antes de ser elegido Papa, el Cardenal Ratzinger advirtió que vivimos en una “dictadura del relativismo”. Esta filosofía básicamente dice que las ideas personales de cada uno sobre lo que es verdadero o falso, correcto o incorrecto son igualmente válidas, como si no hubiera una verdad objetiva o correcta en absoluto. La gente de nuestro mundo moderno considera que todo es relativo; no creen que pueda haber una “verdad, un camino” al que puedan comprometer sus vidas. En nuestro Evangelio de hoy, Tomás dudó, pero Cristo le dio la respuesta más clara posible: “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida”.

Yo soy el Camino: Nuestro Señor dijo: “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida. Nadie viene al Padre sino por mí”. Jesús se nos presenta como el que puede dar pleno sentido a nuestra existencia, como el que es capaz de satisfacer nuestro deseo de felicidad, de alegría, de vida verdadera. Reconociendo a Jesús como Camino, ¿alguien podría perder el camino hacia el Padre? sabiendo que Él es la verdad; ¿Por qué alguien buscaría la verdad en otros, o en meras criaturas? Teniendo vida en Él, ¿podría la muerte tener la última palabra en nuestras vidas?

Yo soy la Verdad: Jesús es la verdad que debemos seguir conociendo y sirviendo. Dios se ha hecho nuestra palabra, se ha acercado tanto que podemos escuchar perfectamente el latido de su corazón. Jesús es el verdadero rostro de Dios. Es humano querer tener la razón, y la mayoría de la gente considera que la tiene, pero solo hay una verdad. ¿Cómo podemos saberla? ¿Dónde podemos encontrarla? Jesús responde a esta interrogante de manera sorprendente, diciendo que Él es la verdad. La pregunta “¿qué es la verdad?” ahora tiene una respuesta decisiva: “Yo soy la verdad”.

Yo soy la Vida: Entre los diversos estilos de vida que siguen las personas, ¿cómo podemos encontrar uno que sea más real, más digno, más intenso? Jesús responde también a esta pregunta, una vez más de manera existencial, personal. Jesús nos asegura que Él es la vida. Nuestros ídolos nunca pueden ser el buen camino, ni una buena verdad, ni una buena vida; más bien son meras distracciones falsas. Jesús revela la realidad de Dios: “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida”. Un camino que nos lleva al Padre, una verdad que nos da motivo de lucha, una vida que nos prepara para nuestro hogar eterno. Nuestra pobre y débil existencia es transformada por su presencia de manera maravillosa.

Verdaderamente, vale la pena correr el riesgo de decir con toda nuestra fe: ¡yo me arriesgo con Cristo! Como escribió San Pedro, “…quien crea en Él no será avergonzado”. (1 Pedro 2,6)
