Eucharistic Revival…and we bid farewell to Msgr. Willie

Dear Friends in Christ,

The source and summit of our Catholic faith is the Most Holy Eucharist. With that in mind, the USCCB is promoting three years of Eucharistic renewal within our parishes and missions. Here at St. Mary Help of Christians, we are fortunate to be one of six parishes to host a special event of the National Eucharistic Revival. A Eucharistic Revival Mission Night is coming to us on Friday! Specifically, Friday, April 28th from 6:00-7:30pm at Old St. Mary’s following the daily Mass.

Father Manuel Dorantes of the Archdiocese of Chicago will be our featured Eucharistic preacher. Please join us (and invite a friend) for an evening of prayer, preaching and inspiration that will encourage us to proclaim the Good News that we encounter in a very personal way in the Holy Eucharist. Sadly, the time has come for us to bid farewell to Msgr. Willie Gomes. He has been in our Deanery for over two years now. After much prayer and deliberation, he has decided to return to his Diocese of Rockville Centre. I first got to know Msgr. Willie when he stayed with me at Our Lady of Peace in North Augusta while his suite was being prepared at our rectory. I came to know him as a very generous and kind priest, who though retired was very willing to help with the ministries of the parish.

Here at St. Mary’s, Msgr. Willie has celebrated many daily Masses and at least one on the weekends, as well as hearing confessions. He has also been very generous in helping our neighboring parishes as well. During this past Holy Week, Msgr. Willie’s help was critical in hearing confessions on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. I don’t know how we would have managed without him! We had huge numbers of confessions on those days.

Msgr. Willie is approaching 53 years in the priesthood and almost 39 years in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Father Orlando and I have truly benefited from his wisdom and experience. For most of the time during my priesthood, I have lived by myself in the rectory. While it is true that I am very independent, it has been a true blessing to live with Msgr. Willie and Father Orlando. The fellowship and camaraderie of the priesthood is indeed special!

We will say a formal farewell to Msgr. Willie at 12:15pm in the Our lady of Guadalupe Rose Garden immediately after the 11:00am Mass. Please join us as we bid him farewell and keep him in your prayers as he opens another chapter in his priesthood.

Queridos amigos en Cristo,

La fuente y culmen de nuestra fe católica es la Santísima Eucaristía. Con eso en mente, la USCCB (Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos, por sus siglas en inglés) está promoviendo tres años de avivamiento eucarístico dentro de nuestras parroquias y misiones. Aquí en Sta. María, Auxilio de los Cristianos, somos afortunados de ser una de las seis parroquias que organizan un evento especial del Avivamiento Eucarístico Nacional. ¡El viernes tendremos una noche de misión de avivamiento eucarístico! Específicamente, el viernes 28 de abril de 6:00pm a 7:30pm en Sta. María Histórica después de la misa diaria (esta actividad es en inglés).

El Padre Manuel Dorantes de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago será nuestro predicador eucarístico destacado. Únase a nosotros (e invite a un amigo) para una noche de oración, predicación e inspiración que nos animará a proclamar las Buenas Nuevas que encontramos de una manera muy personal en la Sagrada Eucaristía. Lamentablemente, ha llegado el momento de despedirnos de Mons. Willy Gomes. Él ha estado en nuestro decanato por más de dos años. Después de mucha oración y deliberación, ha decidido regresar a su Diócesis de Rockville Centre. Primero conocí a Mons. Willie cuando se quedó conmigo en Nuestra Señora de la Paz en North Augusta mientras se preparaba su dormitorio en nuestra rectoría. Llegué a conocerlo como un sacerdote muy generoso y amable, quien aunque jubilado estaba muy dispuesto a ayudar con los ministerios de la parroquia.

Aquí en Sta. María, Mons. Willie ha celebrado muchas misas diarias y al menos una los fines de semana, además de escuchar confesiones. También ha sido muy generoso en ayudar a nuestras parroquias vecinas. Durante esta pasada Semana Santa la ayuda de Mons. Willie fue fundamental para escuchar confesiones el Viernes Santo y el Sábado Santo. ¡No sé cómo nos las habríamos arreglado sin él! Tuvimos un gran número de confesiones en esos días.

Monseñor Willie se acerca a los 53 años de sacerdocio y casi 39 años en la Diócesis de Rockville Centre. El Padre Orlando y yo realmente nos hemos beneficiado de su sabiduría y experiencia. Durante la mayor parte del tiempo durante mi sacerdocio, he vivido solo en la rectoría. Si bien es cierto que soy muy independiente, ha sido una verdadera bendición vivir con Mons. Willie y el Padre Orlando.
