Holy Mother of God

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy New Year of Grace – 2023! The civil new year brings us an opportunity to have that moment in time to start again. For us as Catholic Christians, we have a unique opportunity since this transition occurs during one of our most powerful and important liturgical celebrations – the Season of Christmas. In particular, today is what we call the Octave Day of Christmas and the celebration of the most important title of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Mother of God.

As with all titles for Blessed Mary, this one ultimately speaks about her Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. “Mother of God” is a theological statement about who Jesus truly is. “Mother” describes His humanity. Humans have mothers, and Jesus is fully human. The rest of the title, “of God,” describes His divinity. In our Creed we proclaim that Jesus is indeed “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God.” May this holy season of Christmas combined with this unique opportunity we have to “start over” help you to grow in wonder and love of our good, gracious, and merciful God, who loves us so much that He came to save us from ourselves.

On the celebration of the Epiphany, Bishop Jacques Fabre will visit St. Mary’s for the first time! On January 8, Bishop Fabre will celebrate both the 11am and 1pm Masses. A reception in his honor will follow at 2:30pm in St. Angela Hall. Let’s give Bishop Fabre our warm St. Mary’s welcome at Holy Mass and the reception! (By the way, his last name is best pronounced by leaving off the “re” at the end and making one syllable – “FAHB”. However, you can also call him Bishop Jacques – kind of like “jock” but putting a “sz” at the beginning. If all else fails, do what I do and just say, “Bishop”!)

The visit of a bishop to one of his parishes is always an exciting event. A bishop is a true successor to the Apostles and Chief Shepherd of his diocese. Please pray for Bishop Fabre as he seeks to bring us, this little flock, ever closer to the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. May you and your families have a truly blessed and Happy New Year!

The Mother of the Redeemer goes before us and continually strengthens us in faith, in our vocation and in our mission. By her example of humility and openness to God’s will, she helps us to transmit our faith in a joyful proclamation of the Gospel to all, without reservation. … To her let us entrust our journey of faith, the desires of our heart, our needs and the needs of the whole world, especially of those who hunger and thirst for justice and peace, and for God. – Pope Francis, 2014
