Black Catholic History Month

11-13-2022Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B.Wilson,VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

November is Black Catholic History Month. “The presence and contributions of African Catholics range from the earliest centuries of the Catholic Church to the present. … Let Catholics from all the nations of the world rejoice in the Gospel and the gifts presented by members of every race who bear the name of Catholic.” (from an article by Fr. Raymond Petrucci) Let us help each other as brothers and sisters in one faith to create a glimpse of heaven, the “great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and language. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb” (Rev. 7:9).

As part of our parish’s celebration, Nov 17–25 we will be praying the Novena to Fr. Augustus Tolton, who is on the path to canonization. Copies of the novena (a nine-day prayer) can be picked up at the doors of our churches. We will pray it publicly on the first day, the 17th, at the 5:30pm daily Mass. Father Tolton needs two miracles for canonization – why not you? Ask with confidence and faith! “The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful” (James 5:16). Beginning November 19, the Gift Shop will also open Saturday and Sunday evenings a half hour before and a half hour after the Mass through Christmas. Come see our many new items such as the Christmas ornament featuring our Nativity stained glass window, coffee mugs with our parish logo, Catholic coffee (St. Michael dark roast, St. Peter medium roast, St. Nicholas Christmas blend, and Sleeping St. Joseph decaf), ornaments, nativities, and many other seasonal items.

Very important: Any volunteers who may need to complete our safe environment training or paperwork please get this done as soon as possible. Every year, our diocese requires each pastor to sign a report that their parish is 100% compliant. Compliance means that each volunteer is up-to-date on all necessary training and forms. If even one person is not up-to-date, the parish does not comply. Our parish’s Safe Environment Coordinator, Cynthia Foley, stands ready to help you. We absolutely need your reply. Forms and training are on our website. Click “Parish,” then click “Protecting Our Children & Vulnerable Adults.” For forms, just scroll to the last heading on right column. If you no longer wish to actively participate in volunteer ministries that require safe environment training, please let Cynthia know so that your can be marked “inactive.” And thanks for your help in this incredibly important endeavor!

Finally, don’t forget the Aiken Deanery Eucharistic Procession on November 20! Please gather at 2:45pm in front of the church. Also, please note that because of these festivities, there will be no 5pm Mass Nov 20. Please plan to attend a different Mass on the 20th.

Padre Wilson
