Life is Worth Living

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Regarding the future Science and Engineering Academy wing of our St. Mary’s School, thanks so much to our parish families who have pledged. With just a few, we now have an incredible $5,166,400 of our $6,900,000 goal! Two factors will close this gap and allow us to break ground on schedule: 1) The probability that some construction costs may be coming down; and 2) Your generous pledge. Our Diocese will allow us to begin once we have half the planned cost covered in cash and the rest in pledges, and we are very close. Thank you for your help!

Most of this week, I will be away in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, visiting my alma mater, St. Vincent Seminary. I will also be visiting with the seven of our diocesan seminarians who attend St. Vincent’s. Pray for these men and for all our seminarians, who are preparing to give their lives in service to you. And please pray that many more men will answer the call from God to serve in building up the Kingdom of God as holy priests.

As we continue with Respect Life Month, please remember to return your baby bottle with your donation to Life Choices Pregnancy Center of Aiken. Through our loving donations, Life Choices is able to offer free pregnancy tests, free ultrasounds, and free counseling to women facing unplanned pregnancies. The center also offers both moms and dads free parenting classes (taught from a biblical perspective), and much more, all thanks to our donations. Donations will be collected at Mass, or you may drop yours off by the parish office.

Some inspiring words from our South Carolina Catholic Conference:
“As children of God, we must respect the dignity and rights of every person, formed in the image and likeness of the Creator. The depth of our teaching gives us a profound understanding of life issues – from abortion to doctor assisted suicide and the death penalty. It is incumbent upon us to procure safety, love and protection for all people.

“St. John Paul II once stated, ‘To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It’s impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop.’”

“When lives, including those of the preborn, are subjected to the personal choices of others, no other value or right will be guaranteed. Life is worth protecting. May we never grow silent or complacent when it’s at risk and allow each person to enjoy God’s first gift to all humanity.”

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Con respecto a nuestra nueva sección, la futura Academia de Ciencias e Ingeniería de la escuela Sta. María, quiero expresar mi agradecimiento a las familias de la parroquia que se comprometieron a dar su apoyo. Con solo unas cuantas familias, contamos ahora con la increíble cantidad de $5,166,400 del costo total de la meta de $6,900,000! Dos factores nos pueden ayudar a cerrar esta brecha y permitirnos iniciar la construcción en la fecha prevista: 1) la probabilidad que algunos gastos de construcción puedan bajar; y 2) su generoso apoyo. La diócesis nos permitirá iniciar el trabajo cuando tengamos a mano la mitad del costo en efectivo y el resto en promesas, y estamos muy cerca de lograrlo.

La mayoría de esta semana estaré en Latrobe, Pennsylvania, visitando mi alma mater, el Seminario de San Vicente, y visitando también a los siete seminaristas de la diócesis que estudian allí. Pido sus oraciones por ellos y por todos los seminaristas, que se preparan para poner su vida al servicio de la comunidad. También pido sus oraciones para que muchos más oigan el llamado a servir y ayudar a construir el Reino de Dios como santos sacerdotes.

Seguimos observando el mes del Respeto a la Vida, y les recuerdo que devuelvan los biberones con su donación a Life Choices Pregnancy Center de Aiken. Su donación le permite a Life Choices ofrecer pruebas de embarazo, ultrasonido, y asesoría a mujeres con embarazos no planeados – gratuitamente. El centro también ofrece a los padres clases para ellos (con una perspectiva bíblica), y mucho más, y todo esto gracias a las donaciones. Estas se recogerán en la Misa, o en la oficina parroquial. La Conferencia Católica de Carolina del Sur nos ofrece palabras inspiradoras:

“Como hijos de Dios, debemos respetar la dignidad y los derechos de las personas, formadas en la imagen y semejanza del Creador. La profundidad de nuestras enseñanzas nos ayuda a entender los problemas de la vida – desde el aborto al suicidio asistido y la pena de muerte. Nos incumbe a todos procurar la seguridad, el amor y protección para todos."

“San Juan Pablo II dijo una vez, ‘El ser activamente pro-vida es contribuir a la renovación de la sociedad por medio de la promoción del bien común. Es imposible promover esto sin reconocer y defender el derecho a la vida, sobre el cual todos los demás derechos inalienables de las personas se fundan y a partir de los cuales se desarrollan.’”

“Cuando las vidas, incluyendo la de los no nacidos, se someten a la decisión personal de otros, ningún otro valor o derecho estará garantizado. La vida vale la pena protegerla. Que nunca callemos o caigamos en la complacencia cuando la vida está en riesgo y hagamos posible que cada persona disfrute del primer don que Dios le diera a la humanidad.”
