Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Please mark your calendars for some wonderful upcoming events:
- The results are in! The information you provided over the last few months for our Parish Strategic Plan has been compiled. Join us October 23 in St. Angela Hall at 12:15pm (immediately following the 11:00am Mass) as our Parish Pastoral Council presents the findings. Remember that this is not the end; it is only the beginning as these results will generate more ideas and help direct our beloved parish as we go forward. One finding that I thought was particularly interesting is that, overwhelmingly, parishioners would like more opportunities to gather and socialize. This is such an important part of our faith – to help each other in our faith by connecting with others who share this same divine faith.
- Tuesday, November 1, is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. (A Holy Day is a special day the Church asks all her people to attend Mass even though it is not a Sunday.) All Saints Day celebrates literally all the Saints who have made it to heaven, not just those officially canonized. These special intercessors pray for us and encourage us along our way. We have a variety of Masses to help you satisfy this important duty to attend Holy Mass. Please note that all Masses are in the church except for the 6:30am Mass: Mon. Oct. 31, Vigil at 5:30pm; Tues. Nov. 1 at 6:30am (Old St. Mary’s); 12:00pm; 5:30pm; and 7:00pm (in Spanish).
Wednesday, November 2, is All Souls Day and begins our month of praying for our Faithful Departed. While not a Holy Day, it is still special to us as Catholics. Masses are: 8:20am (church); 11:00am (Calvary Cemetery, 1255 University Lane); and 7:00pm in Spanish (Old St. Mary’s). We take this month to pray for our beloved departed souls and also for those who have no one to pray for them that they might receive their final purification from all their sins and attachments to worldly things in order to see God face-to-face.
The envelopes you receive for All Souls Day include a space to write names of your faithful departed, which will be placed on the altar throughout November. Any donation goes to the priests offering Mass through November, and we privately pray for all these names at every Mass.
We had a great turnout for the church tour on October 8! I will be giving another tour on November 5, beginning at 10:30am in the courtyard. This is no ordinary tour. We will take a look at the theological significance of the church building for Catholics, as well as going “behind the scenes” to point out some things specific to St. Mary’s. The tour lasts approximately one and a half hours. Sign up on the parish website. Space is limited to the first thirty people.

- ¡Ya tenemos los resultados! La información para nuestro Plan Estratégico Parroquial ha sido recopilada. Nos reuniremos el 23 de octubre en el Salón Sta. Angela a las 12:15pm (inmediatamente después de la Misa de las 11:00am) para que nuestro Consejo Pastoral Parroquial presente los hallazgos. Recuerde que este es solo el comienzo, ya que estos resultados generarán más ideas y ayudarán a dirigir nuestra amada parroquia a medida que avanzamos. Un hallazgo que me pareció particularmente interesante es que, abrumadoramente, a los feligreses les gustaría tener más oportunidades para reunirse y socializar. Esta es una parte muy importante de nuestra fe: ayudarnos unos a otros mientras nos conectamos y compartimos en nuestra fe divina.
- El martes 1 de noviembre es el Día de Todos los Santos, día de precepto. El Día de Todos los Santos celebra literalmente a todos los Santos que han llegado al cielo, no solo a los oficialmente canonizados. Estos intercesores especiales oran por nosotros y nos alientan en nuestro camino. Tenemos una variedad de horarios para ayudarlo a cumplir con este importante deber de asistir a la Santa Misa. Tenga en cuenta que la Misa de la Vigilia, el 31 de octubre las 5:30pm y la del martes 1 de noviembre a las 6:30am serán en Sta. María Histórica; 12:00pm; 5:30pm; y 7:00pm (español) serán en la iglesia.
- El miércoles 2 de noviembre es el Día de los Fieles Difuntos y comienza nuestro mes de oración por nuestros difuntos. Si bien no es un día de precepto, sigue siendo especial para nosotros como católicos. Las misas son: 8:20am (iglesia); 11:00am (Cementerio Calvary, 1255 University Lane); y 7:00pm en español
(Sta. María Histórica). Aprovechemos este mes para orar por las almas de nuestros difuntos y también por aquellos que no tienen a nadie que ore por ellos para que puedan recibir la purificación final de todos sus pecados para poder ver a Dios cara a cara. Los sobres designados para el Día de los Fieles Difuntos incluyen un espacio para escribir los nombres de sus difuntos y se colocarán en el altar durante todo noviembre. Cualquier donación se destina para los sacerdotes que ofrecen Misa en noviembre, y rezamos en privado por todos estos nombres en cada Misa.
- ¡Tuvimos una gran participación en el tour de la iglesia el 8 de octubre! Estaré dando otro recorrido el 5 de noviembre, comenzando a las 10:30am en el patio. Este no es un recorrido ordinario. Echaremos un vistazo a la importancia teológica del edificio de la iglesia para los católicos, además de ir "detrás de escena" para señalar algunas cosas específicas de Sta. María.
