A Miracle of Faith

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This Thursday, August 11, is the feast day of St. Clare of Assisi. Daily Mass at 5:30pm this day will have special music. Our parish has a close connection to this marvelous holy woman through our Ste Claire Chapel (which you might notice uses the French spelling of the name.)

Saint Clare was born into a noble family of Assisi, Italy, on July 16, 1194. At the age of fifteen, Clare heard the preaching of a local fellow named Francis, and she was changed forever. She refused the marriage that her father planned for her, planning instead to dedicate her life to Christ.

When she was eighteen, Clare quietly slipped out of her father’s home one night and met up with St. Francis and his friars at a tiny little chapel called the Portiuncula. Here she received a rough woolen habit, swapped her bejeweled belt for a common rope, and sacrificed her long, beautiful tresses to the scissors of St. Francis. She took the veil of consecrated life and from that moment on vowed to live her life entirely in the service of Jesus, her heavenly Spouse. Saint Francis placed her in a Benedictine convent, which her father and uncles then stormed in rage, trying to get her to return home. Clare clung to the altar of the church, threw aside her veil to show her cropped hair, and remained adamant. Sixteen days later her sister Agnes joined her followed by many others. These Sisters lived a simple life of great poverty, austerity, and complete seclusion from the world.

One story in particular demonstrates Clare’s deep prayer and trust in God. During a raid on Assisi by a group of Saracen invaders, St. Clare took a monstrance containing the Most Blessed Sacrament and placed it at the convent gates. She prayed to God and then said to her Sisters, “Don’t be afraid. Trust in Jesus.” No one knows exactly what the Saracens saw, but whatever it was caused them to turn around and flee. This is the reason you see the stained-glass window of St. Clare holding a monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament in Ste Claire Chapel. Saint Clare died in Assisi on August 11, 1253, and was canonized rather quickly in 1255. When Ste Claire Chapel was built in 1880, it was our parish church. No one at the time would have imagined that one day it would become our exceptionally beautiful chapel for Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. How could they have known that one day, the monstrance held in St. Clare’s hands would be mirrored in the monstrance below on the altar, calling the parishioners of St. Mary’s parish and, indeed, the whole community of Aiken, to adore Jesus Christ, truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament?! May He perform a miracle of faith for you, too. Saint Clare of Assisi, pray for us!

Yours in Our Lord and Our Lady, Father Wilson

“No tengan miedo.
