Back to School

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Well, school is back in full swing! Please pray for all of our students as they embark upon another year of learning. May Christ the Divine Teacher inspire all teachers in their vital vocation. Here is a fitting prayer you can offer for all students: Lord our God, in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe. Send, we pray, your Spirit upon our students, and fill them with your wisdom and blessings. Grant that they may devote themselves to their studies and draw ever closer to you, the source of all knowledge. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please note that with St. Mary’s School back in session, the Wednesday morning Mass will move back to the Fairfield Street church and will begin ten minutes earlier (8:20am) to accommodate our school schedule. You are welcome to attend Mass with our St. Mary’s students.

The confessional renovation in Old St. Mary’s is nearing completion. When finished, it will operate much like the confessionals in the new church with red and green lights above the penitent-side door to let you know if the confessional is free (green) or occupied (red). There will also be an option for face-to -face (if the priest also agrees), where the priest can pull back the screen. As a reminder, daily confessions are available in Old St. Mary’s before the 5:30pm daily Masses on Mon, Tues, Thur, and Fri 4:45–5:15pm.

This Saturday, August 27, is the feast day of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine of Hippo. St. Augustine credits God’s grace and his mother’s prayers for bringing him out of his sinful life to not only find faith in Jesus Christ, but also become one of the most important and influential Saints in history. Saint Monica prayed for her son daily for thirty years (and longer for her husband, who also became Christian), and she has become the patron saint of mothers, wives, and for conversion. Saint Monica, pray for us!

I recently heard some unfortunate and misleading misinformation on the BBC about the lack of services given through pregnancy centers. The person stated, “Their help is a bag of diapers or baby formula or something like that, and that doesn’t solve the problem.” The sentiment is repeated around other news sources. This is patently not true and must come from ignorance of the great work that pregnancy centers do, like our local Life Choices Pregnancy Care Center here in Aiken. Life Choices and centers like it work with each woman to help her through her pregnancy and beyond, even giving references to local community services for post-pregnancy care. Please pray for and support the work these wonderful care centers provide. If you or someone you know needs their support, which is free and confidential, just contact them at 803.649.9890 (pregnancyaiken.com). Let us pray for each other!
