Seeking What Is Above

07-31-2022Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The month of August seems to come out of nowhere, and we suddenly realize we are firmly in the second half of 2022. Along with the advent of August comes the return to school for our children. We still need about three more volunteers to help teach our Sunday morning religious education classes (CCD).

Please contact Mary Ellen Jackson to help at 803-642-2676, or mjackson@charlestondiocese.org

If you have been inside Old St. Mary’s recently, which is where we celebrate regular daily Masses, you will notice that the primary confessional in the corner is undergoing some much-needed renovations. We are constrained by limitations of space; however, when finished, it will operate much more like the confessionals in our newer church with an option to request a face-to-face confession. (Please note that the Church does not require the priest to offer face-to-face.) This is such an important Sacrament, restoring us to our baptismal sinlessness and reconciling us to God. The Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession fills us with God’s grace – His very life – and strengthens us to avoid sin in the future. As a reminder, confessions are offered every day but Wednesday: M, T, Th, and F, 4:45 - 5:15 pm in Old St. Mary’s; Sat 3:30 - 4:30 pm in the church; and Sun 12:30 - 12:50 pm in the church, especially for our Spanish-speaking community. In “new” church news, scaffolding is still present as our artist continues work on adding the image of the Holy Spirit dove in the half-dome above the altar canopy. The scaffolding is set up to allow us to continue to offer Mass, although with some restrictions of movement. When the time comes for the “unveiling,” I will have more to say about the image being installed. In the meantime, please pray for our artist and her helpers forty feet above us! Finally, please enjoy the farewell below from our summer seminarian, Erik Roman. We continue to pray for Erik and for more holy vocations to the priesthood. Let us pray for each other,
Father Wilson

A note from our summer seminarian: St. Mary Help of Christians family, I want to thank you for a wonderful summer together! I had the opportunity to meet with several of you personally, and your hospitality did not go unappreciated. This is a beautiful parish with great parishioners to go along with it. I ask that you all keep myself and all of the Diocese of Charleston seminarians in your prayers. Please also pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, specifically that the great young men from this parish I was privileged to meet this summer may be bold in their discernment. Be assured of my prayers for you all, and thanks again for a great summer! - Erik Roman

- Erik Roman
