Transforming Hearts and Minds with Love

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Monday, July 4, our nation celebrates Independence Day. Daily Mass is moved to 9am. We will be celebrating a Votive Mass of the Immaculate Conception since the Blessed Virgin Mary is the patroness of our country under this title. Also, join us beginning at 8am for a Holy Hour for our nation, which will include Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a special rosary for the United States, and Benediction before Mass at 9am.

Thank you to all who participated in giving feedback last week for our parish’s strategic plan. We are now processing the results. I look forward to sharing the outcomes with you soon.

July 1 began our parish’s new fiscal year. I would like to thank you for your wonderful generosity. We will soon be publishing the annual report, detailing how your donations were used in support of our parish’s ultimate mission to bring the light of Jesus Christ to our world.

Finally, the overturning of the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was an answer to years of prayer and peaceful marching (e.g., the annual March For Life in Washington, D.C.).

It is surely a complex issue in many respects, and this decision has perhaps magnified and solidified divisions, even among Catholics. Our Church’s faith is clear and is true: “Every human life, unique and unrepeatable, has value in and of itself; it is of inestimable value. This must always be proclaimed anew with the courage of the Word and the courage of actions. It calls us to solidarity and fraternal love for the great human family and for each of its members” (Pope Francis on the 25th Anniversary of Evangelium Vitae, March 25, 2020.) What truly ails us cannot be fixed merely with laws. We must transform hearts and minds with the love and truth that comes from the Gospel.

The USCCB recently published “Standing with Moms in Need,” which proclaims “a vision for our society that upholds the truth that every human life is sacred and inviolable—a society in which the legal protection of human life is accompanied by profound care for mothers and their children. We exhort our nation to prioritize the well-being of women, children, and families with both material resources and personal accompaniment so that no woman ever feels forced to choose between her future and the life of her child.” Visit walkingwithmoms.com to learn more. Our parishes and communities must become places of love, forgiveness, and actual, material help for women and couples who are facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies. Additionally, each and every one of us must look at ourselves honestly as Catholics and not pick and choose what life issues we support. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we know that all human life is sacred from its very beginning in the womb until natural death, and every moment in between.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,
El lunes 4 de julio, nuestra nación celebra el Día de la Independencia. La misa diaria será a las 9am. Estaremos celebrando una Misa Votiva de la Inmaculada Concepción ya que la Santísima Virgen María es la patrona de nuestro país bajo este título. A partir de las 8am tendremos una Hora Santa por nuestra nación, que incluirá la Adoración del Santísimo Sacramento, un rosario especial para los Estados Unidos y la Bendición antes de la Misa a las 9am.

Gracias a todos los que participaron dando su opinión sobre el plan estratégico de nuestra parroquia la semana pasada. Espero poder compartir los resultados con usted pronto. El 1 de julio comenzó el nuevo año fiscal de nuestra parroquia. Quiero agradecerles por su maravillosa generosidad. Pronto publicaremos el informe anual, detallando cómo se usaron sus donaciones para apoyar la misión principal de nuestra parroquia de traer la luz de Jesucristo a nuestro mundo. Finalmente, la anulación de la decisión Roe v. Wade de la Corte Suprema de 1973 fue una respuesta a años de oración y marcha pacífica (por ejemplo, la Marcha por la Vida anual en Washington, D.C.).

Ciertamente este es un tema complejo en muchos aspectos, y esta decisión quizás haya magnificado y solidificado las divisiones, incluso entre los católicos. La fe de nuestra Iglesia es clara y es verdadera: “Toda vida humana, única e irrepetible, constituye un valor inestimable. Esto debe anunciarse siempre de forma nueva, con la parresia de la palabra y la valentía de las acciones. Esto llama a la solidaridad y al amor fraterno hacia la gran familia humana y cada uno de sus miembros”. (Papa Francisco en el 25° Aniversario de la Evangelium Vitae, 25 de marzo de 2020). Lo que verdaderamente nos aqueja no se puede arreglar sólo con leyes. Debemos transformar corazones y mentes con el amor y la verdad que vienen del Evangelio.

La USCCB publicó recientemente “Apoyar a las Madres Necesitadas” que proclama “una visión para nuestra sociedad que sostiene la verdad de que toda vida humana es sagrada e inviolable: una sociedad en la cual la protección de la vida humana está acompañada por un gran cuidado de las madres y sus hijos. Exhortamos a nuestra nación a priorizar el bienestar de mujeres, niños y familias con recursos materiales y acompañamiento personal para que ninguna mujer nunca se sienta obligada a elegir entre su futuro y la vida de su hijo”. Nuestras parroquias y comunidades deben convertirse en lugares de amor, perdón y ayuda material real para mujeres y parejas que enfrentan embarazos inesperados o difíciles. Además, todos y cada uno de nosotros debemos mirarnos a nosotros mismos con honestidad como católicos y no elegir qué asuntos de la vida apoyamos.
