Successor to the Apostles

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As of the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, we joyfully welcome our new bishop! Bishop Jacques Fabre was ordained and installed as the Fourteenth Bishop of Charleston on May 13. Through the rite of ordination, Bishop Fabre joins the ranks of the successors to the Apostles. The main part of the ordination rite is the ancient laying on of hands and the prayer of ordination. With roots in the Old Testament for commissioning priests, this was taken up by the Apostles in the New Testament to commission their successors, and it has continued unbroken for 2,000 years. Please pray for our new bishop. If you get the opportunity, perhaps send him a card of congratulations and assure him of your prayers.

The ordination of our new bishop is a timely opportunity for us to consider real, spiritual renewal. We are disciples of Jesus Christ. As such, we don’t have to ask ourselves what is our mission. Our collective “mission statement” can be best summed up in the last words of Jesus to the Apostles at the end of St. Matthew’s Gospel, words of Jesus that I mentioned two weeks ago, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20)

As we consider what it means to be a disciple, we have the perfect example of a disciple right in front of us – the patroness of our parish, the Blessed Virgin Mary. As Help of Christians, Mary teaches us what it means to be a disciple totally devoted to the will of God and completely given over to her Son Jesus. Our parish feast day is coming up – the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, is Tuesday, May 24. Beginning this day and ending on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (June 25), I invite you make a consecration to Jesus through Mary. By this consecration, we humbly set aside ourselves and ask to be totally guided by Mary to learn how to completely love and follow her Son. After all, her last spoken words in Scripture were, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5). As a good mother, she wants to teach us how to do it.

For the Consecration, we will use Fr. Michael Gaitley’s book, 33 Days to Morning Glory.
Companion videos are available on FORMED (search 33 Days to Morning Glory). Here’s how to participate: Get the book: divinemercygiftshop.org . Then, plan to join one of our parish groups: Fridays 6:30-7:30pm in St. Michael Hall starting May 27th; or Sundays 9:30-10:30am in Mother Teresa Hall starting May 29th. Questions? Contact Mary Ellen Jackson at: mjackson@charlestondiocese.org  And let us pray for each other!
