Looking to the Future

05-22-2022Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For several weeks now, our parish council has been working diligently to gather data for a parish strategic plan. Our mission is clear, one which Jesus Himself gives us and which I mentioned in my column last week: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

But how do we as the parish of St. Mary’s in Aiken get there? What are the areas in which we are doing well? What can we do better? What do we need to start? What should we stop doing? The visioning sessions we are offering will gather important data to help us on our journey, a journey with many paths to the same goal: Holiness. We must become, in the words of Christ Himself, “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

In these visioning sessions we are looking for input. We are seeking important information. As pastor, I truly love being the spiritual father and shepherd of this flock in Aiken. However, in order to help offer what the People of God truly need in order to become more like Christ, to seek out the lost, to help bring back those who have strayed, I need your help to be a more effective shepherd. So, if you received an invitation, please plan to participate. Names were chosen at random to ensure participation from a wide demographic. Thank you to all who have participated in phase one. We are now moving to phase two. Phase two is for all those who received an email or letter invitation but have not yet attended a meeting. If this is you, then please plan to attend one of these special sessions this weekend, May 21 and 22. The sessions will be held in St. Angela Hall. Here are the times:

Saturday, May 21 at 6:00pm
Sunday, May 22 at 9:30am, 12:00pm and 6:00pm

Once started, each session should take only about 45 minutes. Obtaining this data first is very important in the process before widening participation even more. By the end of this process, everyone will have had the opportunity to give input in some way, so don’t worry if you haven’t yet … you will have the opportunity. Thank you for doing this. This is an important process. Please take the opportunity to share your thoughts as we develop a vision for the future of our parish.

Finally, I hope you will join us on Tuesday, May 24, for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians – our parish feast day! Masses are at 6:30am and 5:30pm in Old St. Mary’s. The 5:30pm Mass will have special music for the solemnity. Come and pray for our parish family!

Yours in Jesus and Mary, Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
