Into the Desert

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Feb 22, with great joy we received the news that Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Jacques E. Fabre, as Bishop-elect of Charleston. Bishop-elect Fabre is a priest of the religious order of the Missionaries of St. Charles. Originally hailing from Haiti, he immigrated to New York City while he was in high school. He was ordained to the priesthood in Brooklyn, New York on Oct 10, 1986, for the Missionaries. The Bishop-elect is perfectly fluent in five languages: English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Creole. Bishop-elect Fabre will be ordained and installed as the 14th Bishop of Charleston on Fri, Apr 29. More news will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, the Holy Father has accepted the resignation of Bishop Guglielmone and has appointed him as our Apostolic Administrator, a “caretaker” of sorts until our new bishop is installed. We are very grateful for Bishop Guglielmone’s tireless dedication over these many years to our diocese. Please pray for both our Bishop-elect and for our retired Bishop during this important time.

We have, of course, entered into the solemn season of Lent. At the same time, we see senseless violence and the shattering of peace in Ukraine. Pope Francis had asked that Ash Wednesday be a day of prayer and fasting for peace. If you missed it, you can still do a day or days of fasting and prayer for peace. God exists, after all, outside of all space and time, and our prayers always matter. Please pray for peace and for all those in Ukraine suffering from the effects of war and the loss of freedoms.

The season of Lent brings us the gift of more silence at Mass, which can help us enter more deeply into contemplation and meditation on the Word of God and the Sacrament we are receiving. If you are struggling with this extra silence, then rejoice - that means it’s working! The Gloria is suspended for the Sunday Masses along with the Alleluia. Our fasting, prayer, and almsgiving is done in joy because we know the supreme happiness that awaits Christ’s faithful in heaven. The victory has already been won for us through the Passion, Death, and glorious Resurrection of Christ.

Finally, the replacement of the 116-year-old roof on Old St. Mary’s is complete, and the new roof looks magnificent! Being made of the same sturdy material, it should last us another hundred years or more. With the reopening of Old St. Mary’s, please note that, with the exception of the 8:20am school Mass, all daily Masses have returned to Old St. Mary’s. It’s been two years since we moved daily Masses because of the pandemic. It’s nice to be back in our historic 1905 home!

Have a blessed and fruitful Lent. Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
