Bishop's Annual Appeal

02-06-2022Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson, VF

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Mark your calendars! Ash Wednesday is March 2. Begin thinking how you will mark the forty days in ways that will increase your desire for and love of God, and how a good penance during the holy season of Lent can help you turn away from sinful habits, placing God firmly in the center of your life and heart. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be 7am, 8:20am, 12noon, 5:30pm, and 7pm (in Spanish).

This weekend marks the kickoff to the 2022 Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA). First, a big thank you to each person who helped us make our parish’s goal of $108,958 last year. Because of your generosity, we ended up exceeding our goal, raising over $128,700. The parish will receive back half of what we exceeded.

Why should we bother to give to the BAA? While we are an active, energetic parish in Aiken, being Catholic means having a holy concern for others that stretches beyond our parish boundaries; a concern especially for parishes and schools not as blessed as we are here at St. Mary’s. The BAA is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in all the 94 parishes, 21 missions, and 33 Catholic schools and organizations throughout the diocese, many of which are smaller and have fewer resources that we. Through the BAA, we can help spread the Gospel even further. The BAA helps sustain Catholic schools, parishes, programs of religious education and campus ministry, retired priests, and youth and young adult ministries. It supports initiatives to foster vocations as well as respect for life. Additionally, through its support of Catholic Charities, the BAA serves the people of South Carolina and abroad, whose lives are affected by natural disasters, illnesses, hunger, and economic hardship.

The Bishop’s office has designated our 2022 goal to be $140,286. Please join me by offering a special gift to this year’s BAA. You will hear more about the Appeal over the next few weeks and should be receiving an invitation from Bishop Guglielmone in the mail soon if you have not already. If you are not registered in the parish and, therefore, we do not have your address, please pick up information found on the tables next to the church doors. Together as a parish community, we can respond and do our part to share our blessings. May God bless you and your families for your sacrifice and generosity.

Finally, this Thursday, Feb. 10, I will present an Introduction to the Bible, a very basic introduction to our Sacred Scriptures. This presentation will look at the real basics: What does it mean to say “Old” and “New” Testaments? What’s a “testament” anyway? … and more. Join me at 6:30pm in Mother Teresa Hall. Bring your Bibles and your questions! (A nursery will be provided.)
