You Are the Temple of God!

01-09-2022Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Before all else, we should show gratitude. I am grateful first to God for His gift of you and our outstanding parish. We pray for God’s gracious blessings as we begin a new year of grace. I know that I speak for all of you when I also express our immense gratitude to all the “angels and elves” (as they like to be called), who did such an outstanding job decorating the church for the Christmas season. They are truly dedicated and bring such joy to their work!

A big thank you goes to all our musicians in both English and Spanish languages, who helped make our music so uplifting. Thank you to our St. Joseph Altar Guild, working diligently behind the scenes to keep our churches spotless and ready for worship. Likewise, we are grateful for all our Mass coordinators, who set up for Masses. Many thanks to our lectors, our extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, our ushers, and our staff who clean and prepare behind the scenes so well that you and I never know the amount of work it takes. And thank you to the best altar servers a priest could ask for!

Still in the first days of 2022, we pause to remind ourselves of the most important thing… ultimately, the only, one, truly important thing: God. The beginning of a new civil year offers us a great opportunity to cultivate those things that will feed our spiritual life, inform our intellect, and both form and inform our conscience. (Remember, following an unformed and uninformed conscience is really just us doing whatever we selfishly want.) To this end, I encourage you to utilize the free resource offered by the parish called FORMED. It includes numerous video series on the Holy Eucharist, Baptism, Holy Matrimony, and all the Sacraments, as well as books, movies, podcasts, and audio conferences for adults and children, all available in both Spanish and English.

To access FORMED for free, simply go to stmarys-aiken.org, click on the “Formation” tab, then click on the fifth tab titled “Formed.org” under “Adult Formation.” If you have not already created a free account, just follow the instructions, beginning by entering our parish name, St. Mary Help of Christians. If you have already signed up, click the “Sign In” link, enter your email, and FORMED will send you a link to get started watching.

As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we will begin some of the Masses with the Blessing and Sprinkling of Water, recalling our own Baptism. “This sprinkling with water is a visual reminder of Baptism. …Through the sacraments of Christian initiation, we die, are buried, and rise again with Christ: we thereby share in Christ’s victory over sin and death.” (Lawrence Johnson, The Mystery of Faith: A Study of the Structural Elements of the Order of the Mass, 1994.)

Be the temple of God that you are!
