Immaculate Mary

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Wednesday, December 8, we joyfully celebrate a special Holy Day of Obligation – the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Masses are: Vigil, 7 Dec. at 5:30pm; and 8 Dec. at 8:20am, 12noon, 5:30pm, and 7pm in Spanish. We celebrate the conception of Mary in the womb of St. Ann, her mother – one of the supreme preparations God made for His Son to literally take flesh from Mary at the Incarnation. By preserving Mary at the first moment of her existence (her conception) from the original sin of Adam and Eve, Mary was made pure and ready for the later overshadowing of the Holy Spirit at the Annunciation. On May 13, 1846, the United States bishops unanimously chose the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception as patroness of our country. Come pray for your family and our nation on this important Holy Day.

As announced, our Gift Shop has reopened! Right now, we are able to staff it on Sunday mornings from after the 8:30am Mass until 1pm. We are exceptionally grateful to the several volunteers, who are graciously offering their time to run the shop. As we train more volunteers, we hope to have more, expanded hours.

St. Mary’s parish is delighted to host the Aiken Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of the Christmas portion of Handel’s beloved and timeless masterpiece, Messiah, Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 7pm in the church. Tickets are $40 and are available online through their website: aikensymphonyorchestra.com. For more information, contact the ASO at 803.220.7251.

The roof replacement of Old St. Mary’s continues to go extremely well and on schedule. If you stop by, you’ll notice the apse on the back of the church is complete, and the highly pitched sides of the roof are almost done. (For your safety, please observe all areas marked off limits.) By the time this is published, the crane needed to tackle the steeple should be on the way. Please continue to pray for good weather, and above all, please pray for the safety of the workers, who are doing such an excellent job with this dangerous work.

In January, we are excited to re-form our choir under the direction of our parish musician, Frank Deese, to sing at our English Masses. A good, robust choir adds so much depth and beauty to the music of the sacred liturgy and helps everyone to sing the Mass. If God has given you the gift of singing (and especially if you can read music), share this talent with your fellow parishioners. The commitment also involves a weekly rehearsal on Thursdays at 7pm. Please contact Frank Deese at 706.550.5047, or via email at fdeese@charlestondiocese.org.

Next Sunday, December 12, I cordially invite all to join the splendid festivities to mark the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Please see the bulletin for more details.

Come, Lord Jesus!
