Saints and Holy Souls

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Don’t miss Requiem by Gabriel Fauré, a concert by the Columbia Choral Society together with the Aiken Civic Orchestra on All Souls Day, November 2 at 7pm in the church. Tickets are $20 (all students are free) and available at the parish office or at the door on the night of the concert.

While Halloween gets a lot of secular attention, the real celebration is not about witches, devils, and zombies, but about Saints – the inspiring men and women who lived holy lives for Jesus Christ and now live forever in Him. “Halloween” comes from older English meaning the night before – or Eve – of All Hallows Day – or All Saints Day. (Think “hallowed ground,” meaning “holy ground,” and “hallowed be thy name,” i.e., “holy is your name.”)

This year, All Saints Day (Nov. 1) falls on Monday. This is one of three Holy Days in the United States that, if it falls on Saturday or Monday, the usual obligation to attend Mass is lifted. However, it is still, of course, a Holy Day! It is, after all, the Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross made present for us in time. Masses will be at 12:00pm (noon) with our school and at 5:30pm. All Saints Day celebrates all the Saints – not merely those who are officially canonized.

The following day is All Souls Day (Nov. 2) on which we pray for all of our Faithful Departed souls being purified (in the state of purgatory) on their way to heaven. Weather permitting, we will have our annual Mass at Calvary Cemetery at 11am. If you have a loved one buried at Calvary, when you arrive, take a white flag and mark the grave. Immediately after the Mass, we will bless the graves. (Calvary Cemetery is located at 1255 University Lane in Aiken.) We will also have our usual 5:30pm Mass. All Souls Day begins a whole month dedicated to praying for our departed loved ones. If you receive envelopes, you will find one for All Souls Day on which you can write the names of any departed loved ones. These envelopes will be placed on the altar next to the crucifix. Those listed will be remembered in a special way by the priests throughout November. Additionally, you will find the Book of the Faithful Departed near the doors of the church in which you can list loved ones who have died. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen.

Finally, for all of our curious engineers, contractors, and the like, you’ll notice that roof work has been going steady on Old St. Mary’s. They are finishing work on the “flat” sections and will begin replacing the metal shingles soon. Pray for the safety of the workers – it’s a steep roof and a tall steeple!

Yours in Our Lord and Our Lady,

Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
