Air for Christian Lungs

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Milo, Sparky, Precious, and Champ need blessings, too. Even horses, llamas, iguanas, and geckos. All animals of every species are welcome to our annual Blessing of the Animals this year on Saturday, October 2 at 10:00am on the rectory lawn (corner of Park Ave. and York St. next to Old St. Mary’s). (The blessing occurs annually on or near the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.)

Following up on my recent retreat, I wanted to offer a couple of resources that you can do at home. But first, each person has to ask himself or herself a critical question: Am I committed to becoming a true, dedicated disciple of Jesus? Or am I content with just telling people I am a Christian, but without any real desire or plan to live daily as one? Once each of us makes the challenging choice to take up our cross and follow the Teacher as His authentic disciple, then we can begin. The first step of discipleship is developing a genuine prayer life. For the disciple, “Prayer is as necessary as the air, as the blood in our bodies, as anything to keep us alive – to keep us alive to the grace of God” (Mother Teresa). Remember this principle: You have to make time for prayer… You’ll never “find time” for it.

I would like to recommend to you a couple of books to help you “go on retreat” at home. A couple of our parishioners prayed with me during the thirty days with the book, Ascending with Ignatius: A 30-Day At-Home Retreat, by Fr. Mark E. Thibodeaux, S.J. (That’s pronounced “TIB-uh-dough” for those of us not from Louisiana.) It’s a new book (2020) and wonderfully easy to follow day-byday. Another great book I personally use for meditations is An Ignatian Introduction to Prayer: Scriptural Reflections According to the Spiritual Exercises, by Fr. Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V. (OMV = Oblates of the Virgin Mary). Father Gallagher also has several offerings on FORMED, which are worth watching, and offered free for the parish.

Also, I am looking into more opportunities for parish days of retreat and recollection. A thousand parish programs cannot replace our need for a robust life of prayer. Don’t wait to start. You can always begin in the beautiful silence of Ste Claire Chapel, in the real presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Jesus waits for you here: “Could you not watch one hour with Me?” (St. Matthew 26:40)

Lastly, we are finally about to start replacing the roof of Old St. Mary’s! October will bring a flurry of long-awaited activity to replace our 116-year-old metal roof together with the “flat” roofs over the sacristies and on the front of the rectory. How great it is that they still make the same two Victorian patterns that adorn the historic church! It’ll be the same, just shinier.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Rocky, Chulo, Coquito y Toby también necesitan bendiciones. Incluso caballos, llamas, iguanas y pajaritos.

Padre Wilson
