Workmen

07-04-2021Year of St. Joseph

Pope St. John Paul II: At the workbench where he plied his trade, together with Jesus, Joseph brought human work closer to the mystery of redemption.

To think about: Joseph and Jesus were both workmen. Scripture often translates the word as ‘carpenter,’ but the word really has the broader meaning of craftsman who would also work with stone and other building materials as well as wood. At creation, God was an artisan of sorts, creating the orderly and beautiful universe in precise order. Jesus would have learned to ‘create,’ in a smaller way, from Joseph. In our lives, as we work on projects in our house and yard or in our job, we can remember that we are working as Jesus did, and that He is there with us as we work.
