Summertime in the Parish

07-04-2021Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Since Independence Day falls on Sunday this year, daily Mass for Monday, July 5, will be at its normal time of 5:30pm, preceded by confessions at 4:45pm.

Father Francisco continues his well-deserved vacation, visiting family and friends in Mexico. Please continue to pray that he has a relaxing time away. Father returns July 12.

Fun and faith for your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews: The parish is pleased to have the return of the Totus Tuus missionaries July 26-30. This year, Totus Tuus includes children of all ages grades 1–12. (We’re also hoping to include a kindergarten program.) To download the registration form for your children, simply go to our parish website, www.stmarys-aiken.org, click on “Formation” at the top menu, then click “Camp Catholic/Totus Tuus” on the left menu. Once on the page, click “Information and Registration,” and the registration form will download. Grades 1–6 will meet in the morning, and grades 7–12 will meet in the evening. We also need volunteers (ages 7th grade to adults) to help with many things, including: Families to house the college-age missionaries for the week; Families (or parish groups) to host the missionaries for supper; Helpers during the week to assist the volunteers in the activities; Kitchen help (snack & lunch); Adult helpers for a kindergarten program and more (teens and adults welcome); Donations of snacks; and financial support. Please see the website for more details about how you can help.

I’d like to make my annual plea for those wonderful, selfless volunteers to teach our children the faith in our Sunday/CCD program. There are varying levels of commitment that might work for you: Weekly teachers, teacher’s aide, teen helpers, etc. Please contact Mary Ellen Jackson at mjackson@charlestondiocese.org or 803.642.2676 or for more information. Thank you for helping bring our divine faith to the next generation!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I will be away for a special 30-day Ignatian retreat, August 2 to September 3. I thought you might be interested in a little more information about the retreat. Three other priests from our diocese will join me along with our Jesuit director at a new Catholic retreat center in the northwest corner of South Carolina. Like Jesus, we’ll go to the mountains! You can check out Heart Ridge Retreat and Cultural Center at www.heartridgeministries.com. The Ignatian retreat itself is series of spiritual exercises based on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. These spiritual exercises came out of St. Ignatius’ own conversion experience in 1521. They consist of a series of intense prayer and guided meditations, centered on a personal call to conversion, and meditation and contemplation on the whole life of Christ. As my parish family, you will be in my daily prayers, especially in the Holy Mass.

Yours in Our Lord and Our Lady,

Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
