Summer in the Parish

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Father Francisco continues to be away on a well-deserved vacation, visiting his family in Mexico. He will be away through July 11th. We pray that he has a relaxing and Holy Spirit-filled time. While he’s away, we welcome the help of our retired priest-in-residence, Msgr. Willie. Thank you for offering Msgr. Willie such a warm welcome to St. Mary’s.

You’ve all been so incredibly kind and supportive for the twentieth anniversary of my ordination. As part of my personal celebration of twenty years, I am able to attend a special 30-day Ignatian retreat this August, a retreat I have wanted to do for over twenty years! As always, whenever I make a retreat, I take your intentions with me. We are a family, after all!

We received great response for volunteers to help reopen the Gift Shop. It will take a little more time to train the volunteers and process the proper paperwork. If you have retail experience and would still like to volunteer, just contact Mary Frei at the parish office. Also, don’t forget that there are many other volunteer opportunities available: a live-stream tech, ushers, nursery workers, and Wheelchair Express drivers. See our parish website for more details.

Something to think about: A Catholic, especially one who practiced our faith in life, receives at death the great privilege and grace of a Mass of Christian Burial (Requiem Mass). This special Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered for your soul and for the consolation of your family. Recall that during the celebration of Holy Mass, Jesus’ unique sacrifice on the Cross is made present in time. This is the one Sacrifice that takes away our sins. Having a funeral Mass offered for our soul is extremely important. Sometimes, due to family dynamics, various family members may not practice our divine faith or realize the importance of having a funeral Mass offered. You may wish to make your wishes known in writing. You can even “plan ahead,” as we priests do for our own funerals, to ensure your wishes for this important Mass are followed. I hope to produce a little guide for “dying as a Catholic” in the near future. “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival” (St. Luke 12:37)

We have a couple of important liturgical feasts coming up. This Thursday, June 24, is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the patron Saint of our diocese. (Interesting liturgy fact: we only celebrate the birthdays of Jesus, Mary, and St. John the Baptist, our three large stained glass windows.) Also, Tuesday, June 29, is the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. It will mark the 168th anniversary of our parish’s founding in 1853. For both solemnities, we will have special music for the 5:30pm afternoon Masses. Praise God for these heavenly intercessors!

Let us pray for each other!

Willie.
