It's True - He Is Risen!

04-04-2021Pastor's LetterRev. Gregory B. Wilson

I don’t say this lightly: Everything hinges on the fact of what we celebrate today. Everything.

In Jesus Christ, the eternal, Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity – God who is without beginning, without end – took human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, was born in time, was scourged, died a horrible death in front of hundreds of onlookers, and was buried. Humanly speaking, that should’ve been the end.

But, it wasn’t. God did not leave us in sin and death. In His great mercy and compassion for His creature – humanity – created in His own image, He conquered death forever. Jesus Christ is risen from the tomb. At one point, at least 500 people saw Him risen (see St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians 15:3- 8). Not to mention that what the Apostles and other disciples saw inspired them to overcome their fear and overcome themselves in order to go literally to the ends of the earth to tell everyone this truth…even to their deaths. People don’t give up their lives for myths. These Saints were willing to exchange their earthly lives to tell people about the Resurrection of Jesus and the possibility of real life without end. Folks, Jesus Christ is truly risen. Tell the world. On behalf of Fr. Francisco, our Deacons, and the staff and faculty of St. Mary’s parish and school, we wish you a very happy, holy, and faith-filled Easter!

– Father Wilson

“The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the be-all and the end-all of the Christian faith. If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, all bishops, priests, and Christian ministers should go home and get honest jobs, and all the Christian faithful should leave their churches immediately. As Paul himself put it: ‘If Jesus is not raised from the dead, our preaching is in vain and we are the most pitiable of men.’ It’s no good, of course, trying to explain the resurrection away or rationalize it as a myth, a symbol, or an inner subjective experience. None of that does justice to the novelty and sheer strangeness of the Biblical message. It comes down finally to this: if Jesus was not raised from death, Christianity is a fraud and a joke; if he did rise from death, then Christianity is the fullness of God’s revelation, and Jesus must be the absolute center of our lives. There is no third option.

“The path of salvation has been opened to everyone. … Jesus went all the way down, journeying into pain, despair, alienation…. Why? In order to reach all of those who had wandered from God. … The opening up of the divine life allows everyone free access to the divine mercy.

…“So on Easter Sunday, let us not domesticate the still stunning and disturbing message of resurrection. Rather, let us allow it to unnerve us, change us, set us on fire.”

– Bishop Robert Barron
