Take a Walk in His Shoes

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week. These are the sacred days that define who we are as Christians – as disciples. Come, walk with Jesus in His final steps. Some spiritual advice: Don’t try to “find time” to attend these important events. You won’t “find” it. We must make time to spend with Him like we do with anyone we love. See the full schedule in this bulletin. Some highlights of the week:

Tuesday (March 30) at 11:00am – Our priests will be away for the Mass of the Oils at the Cathedral in Charleston. Three oils are blessed by the Bishop for the Sacraments: Oil of the Sick for the Anointing of the Sick; Oil of Catechumens, used before Baptism; and the Sacred Chrism for the baptism of infants, for Confirmation, and for the ordination of bishops and priests. (Please note that St. Mary’s will have no 5:30pm daily Mass or Confessions this day.)

Holy Thursday (April 1): The Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00pm (bilingual) celebrates the institution of the Mass and the Priesthood. As Mass ends, we will go with Jesus, truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, in procession down Park Avenue to our own Garden of Gethsemane – the Altar of Repose – at Old St. Mary’s. “Could you not watch with me one hour?” (St. Matthew 26:40). Old St. Mary’s will remain open until Midnight for solemn prayer.

Good Friday (April 2): A day of both fast & abstinence from meat. See the full schedule in this bulletin and on our website. The solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 3:00pm is the high point of the day. (3pm marks the traditional time the Lord died on the Cross.)

Holy Saturday evening (April 3): We begin with the Great Easter Vigil (bilingual) outside in the church’s courtyard. (Please note that there is no 5:00pm Mass on Holy Saturday.) This ancient liturgy is entirely unique. Full disclosure: It does last over two and a half hours (we are in vigil, after all), and it is one of the most beautiful and inspiring liturgies of Holy Mother Church. On this night, those who have been preparing to enter the Church through Baptism or a Profession of Faith will be brought into full, visible communion.

Easter Sunday (April 4): The Church rejoices as Jesus rises from the dead in glorious splendor in His glorified body. Let us pray more fervently for each other in this holiest of weeks, especially for our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters, who suffer even in our day as Christ suffered for us. Note: For those concerned about crowds this Easter, please attend the 7:00am Mass on Easter morning, which will have the best opportunity for social distancing.

Domingo de Ramos es el comienzo de la Semana Santa. Estos son los días sagrados que definen quiénes somos como cristianos, como discípulos. Ven, camina con Jesús en Sus pasos finales. Algunos consejos espirituales: no intente "encontrar tiempo" para asistir a estos importantes eventos. No lo "encontrará". Debemos hacer tiempo para pasar con Él como lo hacemos con cualquier persona que amamos. Consulte el calendario completo en este boletín. Algunos aspectos destacados de la semana:

Martes (30 de marzo) a las 11:00 am - Nuestros sacerdotes estarán ausentes para la Misa Crismal en la Catedral de Charleston. Tres óleos son bendecidos por el Obispo para los Sacramentos: Óleo de los Enfermos para la Unción de los Enfermos; Óleo de los catecúmenos, usado antes del bautismo; y el Sagrado Crisma para el bautismo de los infantes, para la Confirmación y para la ordenación de obispos y sacerdotes. (no habrá misa o confesiones diarias a las 5:30 pm este día).

Jueves Santo (1 de abril): La Misa de la Cena del Señor a las 7:00 pm (bilingüe) celebra la institución de la Misa y el Sacerdocio. Cuando termine la Misa, iremos con Jesús, verdaderamente presente en el Santísimo Sacramento, en procesión por Park Avenue hasta nuestro propio Huerto de Getsemaní, el Altar del Reposo, en Old St. Mary's. "¿Conque no pudieron velar una hora junto a Mí?" (San Mateo 26:40). Old St. Mary's permanecerá abierto hasta la medianoche para la oración solemne.

Viernes Santo (2 de abril): día de ayuno y abstinencia de carne. Consulte el calendario completo en este boletín y en nuestro sitio web. La solemne liturgia de la Pasión del Señor a las 3:00 pm es el punto culminante del día. (Las 3 de la tarde marca la hora tradicional en la que el Señor murió en la Cruz).

Noche del Sábado Santo (3 de abril): Comenzamos con la Gran Vigilia Pascual (bilingüe) afuera en el patio de la iglesia. (no hay Misa a las 5:00 PM el Sábado Santo). Esta antigua liturgia es completamente única. Divulgación detallada: dura más de dos horas y media (estamos en vigilia), y es una de las liturgias más hermosas e inspiradoras de la Santa Madre Iglesia. En esta noche, aquellos que se han estado preparando para entrar en la Iglesia a través del Bautismo o una Profesión de Fe, entrarán en comunión plena y visible.

Domingo de Pascua (4 de abril): La Iglesia se regocija cuando Jesús resucita de entre los muertos en glorioso esplendor en Su cuerpo glorificado. Oremos con más fervor los unos por los otros en esta semana santa, especialmente por nuestros hermanos cristianos perseguidos, que sufren incluso en nuestros días como Cristo sufrió por nosotros. Nota: Para aquellos preocupados por las multitudes en esta Pascua, por favor asistan a la misa de las 7 am en la mañana de Pascua, que tendrá la mejor oportunidad para el distanciamiento social.
