Our One Goal - To Be Holy

11-01-2020Pastor's Letter

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

How blessed we are to celebrate All Saints Day this Sunday! It is truly a day for all the Saints, both known and unknown.

Mon, Nov 2, is All Souls Day and begins our solemn month of praying for our Faithful Departed that they may be cleansed from their sins through the saving Cross of Christ. Masses for All Souls: 11:00am at Calvary Cemetery (the church in case of inclement weather), 5:30pm, and 7:00pm (Spanish). The Book of the Faithful Departed will be available near the main doors of the church throughout November to write the names of your loved ones. Regarding the envelopes for All Souls: You are invited to record the names of your departed loved ones on the envelope. These will be placed on the altar and remembered at Masses throughout the month of November.

Parishioners have continued to pledge to the Bicentennial Capital Campaign, and we are now over 1 million of our 1,720,000 goal! Half of every dollar comes back to our parish for much-needed projects. Hopefully, you received a mailing explaining the details of the campaign. Parish volunteers will be calling to see if they can assist you with any questions. It’s easy to donate. Just fill out the pledge card from the mailing, or donate online at www.stmarys-aiken.org. Click on the Bicentennial Campaign banner, which also has more information.

I wanted to briefly comment on the media buzz around Pope Francis’ statement regarding civil unions for same-sex couples, quoted in the recent documentary, Francesco. Not having room to go into great detail, please know that the Pope is not changing Church teaching. In the words of one archbishop, “The pope’s main point, in defense of human dignity, seems to be that families [should] love their children,” even if they are in a same-sex relationship. “He seems to make the point, in defense of human rights, that people in a long-term, stable relationship should enjoy some legal and economic guarantees.” The Church’s teaching that marriage as a permanent, faithful, and fruitful union entered into freely by one man and one woman is not changing. In fact, the Pope often has spoken in defense of the Sacrament of Matrimony as taught by the Church. Also, a significant sentence was omitted by the maker of the documentary. Pope Francis adds in the same interview, “That does not mean approving of homosexual acts, not in the least.”

Finally, November 3 is election day, of course.

God of mercy, we ask you to inspire and guide us as we participate in the upcoming elections for our nation. Help us by your grace to form an earthly government that upholds and protects rights and justice for all citizens, irrespective of race, class, gender, religion, for citizens both born and unborn. Through Jesus Christ, your Son and our true Lord. Amen.

Holy Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, and Patroness of the United States pray for us!
