The Lord, the Giver of Life

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

My recent vacation and retreat were wonderfulopportunities both to relax and recharge. As most of youknow, perhaps my favorite way to unwind is a good, longhike. Over several days in western NC, I was able to clock inover 50 miles of trails with a combined elevation gain of over9,500ft. (If you’re not someone who enjoys hiking, all thatmeans is that I had a great time!) In all my Masses Iespecially remembered each of you and your personalintentions, offering them all up in the greatest possible act ofprayer – the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. As with any timeaway, it’s always wonderful to come home, and it’s great tosee your faces again! (Well, most of your head at least.)

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Let us make aspecial effort to pray the rosary each day this month. Tokeep ourselves motivated, it helps to have in mind a specialintention for whom to offer each rosary. Especially if ourintention is someone we care for, then offering prayer forthem becomes easy – an act of love. Of course, there is noend to needs in our world we could pray for.

October 7 is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which has aspecial tie to Mary’s title as Help of Christians. In 1570, theOttoman Turks set sail to conquer more Christian lands.Through an alliance of Christian leaders arranged by Pope St.Pius V, the Christian forces were able to repel the invasionon October 7, 1571, at the same time liberating about15,000 enslaved Christians. Although calling upon Mary asThe help of Christians is much older, the title was officiallyinserted into the Litany of Loreto about this time. Pius V hadasked the Christian world to pray the rosary for the successof the campaign.

Finally, October is also Respect Life Month. In the Creed, weproclaim the Holy Spirit as “the Lord, the Giver of life.”Catholics pray for the protection of all life beginning with theunborn child onward to natural death. God – infinite andperfect, all-loving and merciful – is the One who gives life. Therefore, there is not one of us who is worthy, not one ofus who can rightfully decide to take it away. There is nounvalued, only valued. There is no unwanted, only wanted. There is just like – a gift from the eternal God.

Some things you can do this month: 1) Study the Church’steaching on why every human life should be valued; 2) Joinothers in the Life Chain, Sunday, Oct. 4, 2:15 PM – 3:30 PMat 183 Old Wagener Rd in Aiken; 3) Choose one Friday thismonth to fast and pray for greater respect for human life;4) Pray the holy rosary for the beautiful gift of life; 5) Youchoose!

Yours in Christ,

Father Wilson

Padre Wilson
